Champions League - European Power Rankings

Eurosport - Wed, 06 May 09:28:00 2009

Manchester United could go top of the European Power Rankings for the first time this season should results go their way this week.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 Champions League Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand celebrates John O'Shea's goal against Arsenal - 0

We take into account domestic, Champions League and UEFA Cup performances, plus the relative difficulty of each team's league, to find out who is the best team in Europe.

The reigning European and Premier League champions have finally put their blip of a few weeks ago behind them and are back on track to retain both trophies after wins over Arsenal and Middlesbrough.

And a second victory over the Gunners in a week on Tuesday will see them rise above second-placed Liverpool ahead of the weekend's domestic programme.

Indeed, should current table toppers Barcelona fall to defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a day later, United will take top spot in our rankings - something they have failed to do all season long so far.

Last week saw no change in the top six places, and little movement in the top 20 in general, with Porto the biggest risers, leapfrogging Arsenal and CSKA Moscow into seventh.

Italian trio Juventus, Roma and Internazionale all dropped a place, while UEFA Cup victors Hamburg took advantage to move up the table. Sporting and Panathinaikos were two other clubs on the rise.

French champions Lyon dropped out of the top 20 after watching their title aspirations all but vanish at the weekend with Aalborg taking their place in the elite group.

European Power Rankings (previous rankings in brackets):

1. (1) Barcelona - 22.50

2. (2) Liverpool - 21.50

3. (3) Manchester United - 21.31

4. (4) Chelsea - 19.66

5. (5) Bayern - 19.05

6. (6) Real Madrid - 18.97

7. (10) Porto - 18.00

8. (7) Arsenal - 17.90

9. (8) CSKA Moscow - 17.86

10. (9) Juventus - 17.83

11. (11) Metalist Kharkiv - 17.50

12. (13) Hamburg - 17.34

13. (12) Roma - 17.17

14. (15) Sporting - 17.00

15. (14) Internazionale - 16.95

16. (16) Atletico Madrid - 16.84

17. (17) Dynamo Kiev - 16.50

18. (18) Shakhtar Donetsk - 16.21

19. (20) Panathinaikos - 16.03

20. (-) Aalborg - 15.86

28. (28) Manchester City 13.51

HOW IT WORKS

Scores are based on points per game in domestic league, Champions League and UEFA Cup games.

Domestic points per game are multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.

League coefficients:

5 - England, Italy, Spain

4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Russia

4 - Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine

Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.

UEFA Cup victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 4. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.

Example: Barcelona

85 points from 34 Liga games = 2.50 points per game.

Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 2.50 x 5 = 12.50

22 points from 11 Champions League game = 2.00 points per game.

Multiplied by European coefficient of five - 2.00 x 5 = 10.00

Total score = 12.50 + 10.00 = 22.50
