Darren Fletcher was left in tears after the harsh red card that ruled him out of the Champions League final.
The Manchester United man was sent off for a clean tackle on Cesc Fabregas when referee Roberto Rosetti mistakenly thought he fouled the Arsenal captain.
As UEFA allow no appeals except in cases of mistaken identity, the Scotsman it set to miss the final in Rome.
However, Fletcher is in good company, joining an illustrious list of players who have missed major finals through suspension.
Paul Scholes rushed to the dressing-room to console Fletcher on Tuesday as he knows his United team-mate's pain all too well.
In 1999, Scholes and Roy Keane both picked up yellow cards against Juventus that saw them miss out on the remarkable 2-1 win against Bayern Munich.
Three days earlier, Denis Irwin was on the sidelines as United completed the second part of their treble with victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup final.
Back in 1983, United were the beneficiaries as Brighton captain Steve Foster was banned for the FA Cup final, which finished 2-2. Foster returned for the replay but Brighton went down 4-0.
Arsenal have had their share of disciplinary misery, with Ian Wright missing the 1994 Cup-Winners' Cup final triumph against Parma, and Sol Campbell sitting out the 2003 FA Cup final with suspensions.
In the same year, Pavel Nedved's efforts dragging Juventus to the Champions League final would earn him the Ballon d'Or, but a soft booking rendered him a spectator as Juve lost to Milan on penalties.
On the international stage, there has been no shortage of high-profile heartache.
The 1990 World Cup final was a poorer affair without the lavishly-skilled Argentina forward Claudio Caniggia. West Germany won a dismal match 1-0 with a late penalty.
A cynical piece of play acting by Slaven Bilic got Laurent Blanc sent off in France's 1998 World Cup semi-final win against Croatia, meaning Blanc was on the sidelines as Les Bleus won football's biggest prize.
Four years later Germany talisman Michael Ballack collected a fateful yellow card in the semi-final against Korea but went on to grab the winning goal. The Germans lost the final 2-0 to Brazil without him.

Perfect final,2 great teams! Man U to win..... Come on you reds!
who the f is bill w some one tell me
who the f is fletcher some one tell me
Fletcher was robbed. He clearly played to ball (everyone but the official saw it). Appeals rule needs to be changed. It's one of those once in a lifetime games you get to play in and he's missing it because the cocky ref was way to quick to pull the red. xD
gutted for fletcher, i rate him as a player. he isnt goin to do anything exciting, but he can play, doesnt miss a pass and can tackle. if he gets in the united team.... that says it all! sour grapes from alot of arsenal fans. the young arsenal team just isnt good enough to win anything major and i dont think they willin the near future unless they buy some top experienced players and players who are always fit.
UP THE VILLA
Boo Hoo
Didnt deserve to get sent off. Wasnt really a penalty either but the ref was looking at it from behind and couldnt really have seen what actually happened but perhaps gave it for fletchers left leg catching fabregas during the tackle as well as the challenge on the ball.
Im a liverpool fan but darren fletcher is one of very few united players i actually admire and think isnt an overpaid moaner
By the way the others of the very few are tevez and giggs
Yes penalty, No, sending off:
Clearly it was not a sending off as he touched the ball but in the end the attacker was impeded as the ball had not gone away and he could have scored so I agree with the penalty.
H, number 74, the push was john o shea! and your allowed to shoulder tackle and use your wieght, like someone else said its a contact sport, every team has a player in the wall to ruffle feathers, not just the big ugly red machine. he got the ball, infact i thought it was a cracking tackle, took a lot of effort, he didnt leave his boot in once he touched the ball away.
to anyone out there who thinks it is automatically a foul if a player goes to ground from behind I can tell you it is not a foul unless he gets the man first. Fletcher clearly didn't and therefore no red card by the way I qualified as a referee 3 years ago and have refereed my fair share of matches and never had a complaint about how it was run. I have never sent anyone off as I believe that it is better to try to keep all the players on the pitch although there are limits and I agree that having given the penalty he had to send Fletcher off I just think that it should be allowed to be appealed.
awwww bless him he was in tears!!! OMG I feel soooooooooooooo sorry for him!!! an yeh i am a girl
go (post 76)
if I remember correctly Fletcher came from the side, got his leg in front and clipped the ball away, I think that is enough of a atouch isnt it? But like i said, i can also see the refs opinion, but that kind of tackle happens all the time, its a contact sport! I dont think the tackle was either high, or dangerous, or really from behind, if the ball is played through you have to make the effort. Like i said before, its one of those things, but its not our fault european leagues are to soft and dont like a good old fashioned tackles which the refs send off for all the time.. Unless he went ploughing in the back, or his boot was near the face, or flying it a la Joey Barton, my opinion is no pen, but hey, the ref had to make a decision and we have to deal with it.
It is only Darren Fletcher after all lol

I didn't see Fletcher once complain. He didn't even protest to the ref, he just walked dejectedly off the pitch knowing he would miss out on the CL final.
The boot was high because the ball was high. It was nowhere near head or knee height. The only possibility of injury would have been to Fletcher himself.
One thing you have said is true though. He plays for United so typical reaction here. ABUs seizing on a rare opportunity to criticize something about United. You can't criticize our results so you try to knock us down some other way. Luckily for us your little opinion amounts to Jack Schitt in the grander scheme of things.
Exactly what more punishment would you give for an honest attempt to play the ball other than to be mistakenly sent be sent off, concede a penalty, and miss out on the CL final. He didn't cripple anyone or glass anyone.
