Champions League - Fletcher joins unlucky club

Eurosport - Wed, 06 May 14:54:00 2009

Darren Fletcher was left in tears after the harsh red card that ruled him out of the Champions League final.

1998 World Cup France Laurent Blanc is sent off - 0

The Manchester United man was sent off for a clean tackle on Cesc Fabregas when referee Roberto Rosetti mistakenly thought he fouled the Arsenal captain.

As UEFA allow no appeals except in cases of mistaken identity, the Scotsman it set to miss the final in Rome.

However, Fletcher is in good company, joining an illustrious list of players who have missed major finals through suspension.

Paul Scholes rushed to the dressing-room to console Fletcher on Tuesday as he knows his United team-mate's pain all too well.

In 1999, Scholes and Roy Keane both picked up yellow cards against Juventus that saw them miss out on the remarkable 2-1 win against Bayern Munich.

Three days earlier, Denis Irwin was on the sidelines as United completed the second part of their treble with victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup final.

Back in 1983, United were the beneficiaries as Brighton captain Steve Foster was banned for the FA Cup final, which finished 2-2. Foster returned for the replay but Brighton went down 4-0.

Arsenal have had their share of disciplinary misery, with Ian Wright missing the 1994 Cup-Winners' Cup final triumph against Parma, and Sol Campbell sitting out the 2003 FA Cup final with suspensions.

In the same year, Pavel Nedved's efforts dragging Juventus to the Champions League final would earn him the Ballon d'Or, but a soft booking rendered him a spectator as Juve lost to Milan on penalties.

On the international stage, there has been no shortage of high-profile heartache.

The 1990 World Cup final was a poorer affair without the lavishly-skilled Argentina forward Claudio Caniggia. West Germany won a dismal match 1-0 with a late penalty.

A cynical piece of play acting by Slaven Bilic got Laurent Blanc sent off in France's 1998 World Cup semi-final win against Croatia, meaning Blanc was on the sidelines as Les Bleus won football's biggest prize.

Four years later Germany talisman Michael Ballack collected a fateful yellow card in the semi-final against Korea but went on to grab the winning goal. The Germans lost the final 2-0 to Brazil without him.

  1. yeh it was a good challenge but it shouldnt have been a red card. the player is not an agressive one or a bad mannered one he is in fact one of uniteds players with a nice attitude which is a change no offence so i feel sorry for the lad he probably dreamed about playing in the final and unfortunately his dream was ruined in the space of 2 minutes. so dont think im a fan of united coz im not

  2. To H, Post #75. Are we to understand that the pushing away of the Arsenal wall contributed to the goal? In any case isn't that something that players do all the time?
It was a brilliant free kick and had nothing to with the wall - unless the wall tumbled down when it was pushed which means it was not well built.

Blatant sending off, high boot and total disregard for the rules and the safety of the opposition player. He plays for Manure so typical reaction there. One rule for them and different rules for everyone else! He should quit complaining and take his punishment. The old "Hard done by routine"! Give us a break.

He doesn't deserve to be allowed play in the final after conduct like that. He is lucky not to get more punishment.

    Live with it!

  4. kdjukes do you know the rules?
it's not just about getting the ball. the nature of the tackle is important. a tackle from behind is always against the defender unless he clearly get's the ball and not the man. in this case fletcher's tackle was from behind, barely got the ball, and was very heavy of fabregas. the ref may have spared him the red, but it was definitely worth the yellow and the penalty. the rules are clear as you say, so why do you bring clowds where you want to? given that it was an italian ref, and in seria a 9 out of 10 the ref would give a red for that, he gave a red for that. enough said. you are used to english refs judging united, well this is europe and europe is not bound to play to fa rules. either united plays by european rules or they can choose to pay their debts in other ways.

  5. Fletcher shouldn't have been sent off, but he shouldn't have pushed the Arsenal wall out of the way either for United's second goal.

You win some, you lose some.

  7. I can't believe some of you people...rules are rules...fletcher got the ball, therefor not a penalty or sending off, tho it did look bad from the refs view so you cant blame him. Gomez taking down Carrick was NOT a pen, gomez got the ball, Carrick couldnt help but tumble, def wasn't a dive, and that was harsh on Spurs. Man u vs Everton, FA Cup Semi...United should have had a pen and didnt. It happens, we get to see the replays 5 times, the Refs get one look. You win some you lose some you know. United to beat Chelsea in the final :-)

  15. I have to say to every Man Utd fan if you thought the Gomes Pen was a pen then so was this, in fact this was less clear. So what you should all be saying is good decesion or what that mean admitting you were handed the title. Seriously the 1 or 2 that go against you is nothing for what you as a team get in return.

  16. Poor judgment from the ref, but poorer still from Fletcher.....why even make such a risky tackle when you are 3 - 0 up with only minutes to play?

  19. Mazhar132 on that logic the role of defender may as well be scrapped. What the hell is the point in a defender not being allowed to touch the ball if it may stop the opposition shooting? Are you saying that once you are in the area the opposition must let you through? or should they line up on the goal line so that there is no way that they could touch the opposing player or the ball?
