Champions League - Fletcher joins unlucky club

Eurosport - Wed, 06 May 14:54:00 2009

Darren Fletcher was left in tears after the harsh red card that ruled him out of the Champions League final.

1998 World Cup France Laurent Blanc is sent off - 0

The Manchester United man was sent off for a clean tackle on Cesc Fabregas when referee Roberto Rosetti mistakenly thought he fouled the Arsenal captain.

As UEFA allow no appeals except in cases of mistaken identity, the Scotsman it set to miss the final in Rome.

However, Fletcher is in good company, joining an illustrious list of players who have missed major finals through suspension.

Paul Scholes rushed to the dressing-room to console Fletcher on Tuesday as he knows his United team-mate's pain all too well.

In 1999, Scholes and Roy Keane both picked up yellow cards against Juventus that saw them miss out on the remarkable 2-1 win against Bayern Munich.

Three days earlier, Denis Irwin was on the sidelines as United completed the second part of their treble with victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup final.

Back in 1983, United were the beneficiaries as Brighton captain Steve Foster was banned for the FA Cup final, which finished 2-2. Foster returned for the replay but Brighton went down 4-0.

Arsenal have had their share of disciplinary misery, with Ian Wright missing the 1994 Cup-Winners' Cup final triumph against Parma, and Sol Campbell sitting out the 2003 FA Cup final with suspensions.

In the same year, Pavel Nedved's efforts dragging Juventus to the Champions League final would earn him the Ballon d'Or, but a soft booking rendered him a spectator as Juve lost to Milan on penalties.

On the international stage, there has been no shortage of high-profile heartache.

The 1990 World Cup final was a poorer affair without the lavishly-skilled Argentina forward Claudio Caniggia. West Germany won a dismal match 1-0 with a late penalty.

A cynical piece of play acting by Slaven Bilic got Laurent Blanc sent off in France's 1998 World Cup semi-final win against Croatia, meaning Blanc was on the sidelines as Les Bleus won football's biggest prize.

Four years later Germany talisman Michael Ballack collected a fateful yellow card in the semi-final against Korea but went on to grab the winning goal. The Germans lost the final 2-0 to Brazil without him.

  1. what a load of piiiiiish!!!!! Everybody KNOWS it wasn't a penalty and UEFA are cowardly c@nts - they can overturn this if they wanted to. Platini was a great player but evrytime he opens his gob, it makes him look like a @#$%! as much as it pains me to say that. The ref made a terribel terrible error and everyone feels for Fletcher!!!

It was a penalty and red card, Fletcher touched the ball but not far away to prevent Cesc from shooting, and he was last man back, just like Gomes took out Carrick it doesn't matter if he touched the ball there was an opportunity to shoot at goal and the offending players prevented it.

  3. Scarlet, I think I love you.
Strummerdood, I agree with everything you said and yes, you were amusing too even if Tom doesn't think so.
jackmcloughlin1, Scarlet made a football comment and had misogynistic drivel spouted at her from your bum-buddy Tom. She answered him in kind. Sometimes it's the only thing these morons understand.
Tom, crawl back up your own ar5e you brain dead bin dipper.

  4. And do you know the meaning of a dive you tard? Gomes went through Carrick, whether he got the ball or not... Carrick had no choice but to go to ground.

Stupid bitter LFC fans... go shine your trophy cabinet in hope you'll get something by 2020.

  5. garyholdstock... you need top stfu as well and go s.uck your husband's dic.k.
he purposely left his legs to injure fabregas????? what a dumb statement.
and he may have come from behind, but he tackled from the side, he wrapped his legs around him.

  6. While I will be the first to agree that Gomes did get the ball and it was a mistake, Gomes did not get sent off. Therefore the two incidents can only be compared in terms of the penalty. Also how was Fletcher not supposed to 'leave his leg out' he had just kicked the ball what do you want him to dislocate his leg and move it so that there is no possibility of touching Fabregas? That's ridiculous. Also Carrick did not dive against Gomes he clearly caught the goalkeeper but it wasn't a foul. And finally Ronaldo does go down far too easily but as you said yourself get over it on the one hand you say Fletcher should get over a bad decision, well doesn't that apply to you as well? again sorry for the rant I just hate it when people say things that are so obviously hypocritical.

  7. hello i am an arsenal fan. I believe this was a bad tackle and anywhere else on the pitch it would have been a yellow card and a free kick. But because it was in the penalty area, it was a penalty and a red card. Everyone just stop commenting and get over it- i was the one who lost 4-1. However, i don't like man u and this is not because of the match. I have always hated them from the first minute i was in this world. But good luck to the teams left in this.

  8. Referee made a mistake but to be fair it's about time they made a mistake against man utd. Anyway the red card will probably do utd a favour coz fletcher's @#$%

From NFMD, on Wed 6 May 1:53PM
  9. keverley you tool, if a man gets the ball before he gets the man without any over-aggressive actions, it's a clean tackle. That's what happened and it wasn't red... get over yourself.
I know you're probably one of those saddos who goes around disagreeing with everything to do with Man Utd.. but please get a life

From i am a teacup, on Wed 6 May 1:52PM
  10. I see many "just because he touched the ball doesnt make the tackle acceptable" but unless you break the guy's legs (or similar dangerous play), surely that's the rule?!? Just cos the attacker falls to the ground doesn't make it dangerous.

From Ashley B, on Wed 6 May 1:52PM
  11. clean tackle?????? come on alex chick..... it was a maybe harsh red card but the foul was sooooo evident.... life goes on now, solutions will be found. he's not sir alex for nothing. am a big arsenal fan but hats off to ManU. nothing to say abt the way they outclassed us even though they were lucky in the beginning.

From Laurent E, on Wed 6 May 1:51PM
  12. Keverley if a player gets the ball and then the man then the tackle is a fair one. the fact that he came in from just behind the player only features in the suitable punsihment afterwards. Fletcher is one of the most under-rated players at United (I did until this season) and he fully deserves to play in the final. Come on UEFA sort it out if you can appeal a decision in one competition then you should be able to appeal them in all competitions. Sorry for the rant

    From andylowe18, on Wed 6 May 1:51PM
  13. it wasn't a red card for the only reason that he got the ball. it was a yellow and a penalty no doubt about it, but the red was a little too harsh.

From go, on Wed 6 May 1:49PM
  14. I thought it was a red Card and rightly so for 2 reasons.
    1. He tackled from behind - think that Man U fans like doing that too.
    2. He purposely left his legs in to injure Fabregas.

Its a Red Card and Utd fans should get over it, bit like Gomes had to get over that Blatant Dive that Carrick did or Ronaldo's obvious dive for his free kick (which was very poor goalkeeping).

Accept it United Fans, Fletcher will not be playing and rightly so, just make sure you are watching when they get beat in the Final by Barcelona or Chelsea.

  15. Keverley, If you nothing decent to say shut up, it was a great tackle, referee made big mistake, end of story.

  16. It was man or ball! he had to go, just because he touched the ball doesnt make the tackle acceptable. Come on Utd - get over it!

From Corrigan, on Wed 6 May 1:32PM
  17. I think it is shameful that UEFA do not allow an appeal in this situation - in any other situation where you are penalised in some way - there is always a right to appeal. As an Arsenal fan, I was of course disappointed in the result - but as a football fan I am genuinely gutted for Fletcher. UEFA need to get their head out of their a55es and realise that 'mistaken indentity' is not the only mistake a ref can, and certainly does, make.

  19. strummerdood!!? I feck you right off because I'm right. You haven't the intelligence to express yourself in any other way. Its frustration that comes from the inability to create an educated opinion. I don't agree with what he said but there was no need to get off of the subject at hand... FOOTBALL!
