Chelsea have more to fear from Barcelona than their attacking flair in the Champions League semi-final leg at Stamford Bridge, argues Eurosport-Yahoo!'s Jonathan Symcox.
Many observers have already claimed they are better than Johan Cruyff's 'Dream Team' of the early 90s - before they have won a trophy.
Many in Catalonia poured scorn on the Blues' performance in securing a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final: 'anti-football', it was called.
Despite these bitter outbursts, it is clear that Guus Hiddink has delivered a masterclass in management to get Roman Abramovich's team where it is today compared to when he took over in February.
No matter that Barca missed late chances and Michael Ballack was fortunate to remain on the field last week: that 0-0 took courage from a club that knew it was up against a different class of ball-playing opponent.
There was no way that Chelsea could have played Barcelona at their own game, on their own patch, and secured a result; whatever your views on how the game should be played, there will always be teams whose achievements are based on tactics and discipline rather than raw talent.
Just look at how Barnsley trumped Chelsea in the FA Cup a year ago, and Liverpool before them; no one then complained of ultra-defensive tactics, and nor should they have.
But there is more to this Barcelona lot than that which is easy on the eye.
Their billing as the ultimate footballing team, with a midfield full of playmakers and some of the best strikers in the world - which have yielded a phenomenal 100 goals in the league alone this season - glosses over the character the side possesses.
Coach Pep Guardiola is a Catalan born and bred, a graduate of the club's famous La Masia academy, a former captain and European Cup winner with that memorable Cruyff side; and he has replicated the Dutchman's success with a squad largely inherited from Frank Rijkaard - one that had become stale and infatuated with its own success.
Compare the 6-2 mauling of Real Madrid at the weekend, the first time the Blaugrana have scored that many goals in the Bernabeu, with the capitulation of Rijkaard's Barca at home to Real a year ago last Christmas.
That side, like the one a few days ago, included the talents of midfield generals Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Yaya Toure, yet it lacked drive, conviction and creativity. Incredible, isn't it?
Guardiola has instilled a work ethic in his players, in terms of their passing and movement, sure, but also when they do not have the ball.
Watch them carefully on the rare occasions that they lose it and you will see Xavi and Iniesta immediately closing down while Toure bosses the entire middle section of the pitch via his physical presence.
Xavi showcased this when he dispossessed Lassana Diarra for Messi's crucial goal, Barca's second, in Madrid. They deny their rivals space; they crave the ball, hunting it down relentlessly.
They have not won a bean, there can be no doubt that they will do so having gone seven points clear in La Liga. Their football has been divine, the midfield a joy to watch - as were Spain at Euro 2008 - while in attack Iniesta has played his part, Eto'o has scored bucketloads, Messi has been stunning and Henry resurgent, a match for when he was at his peak with Arsenal.
Yet Guardiola has cultivated a side which propagates the Cruyff ideal; one containing brilliant foreigners and technically-astute Spaniards who are willing to bleed for the Barca cause.
When Madrid opened the scoring, the notoriously fragile Barcelona mindset must have kicked in among the fan clubs and inside pro-Barca bars all over Spain.
But back they came with two immediate strikes; and again, when Sergio Ramos nodded Real back into it, barely two minutes passed before Xavi played in Henry and they re-established a two-goal advantage.
Pep has always put forward that philosophy of pass and move, as a player, observer and coach, and at all times with Barca in mind; but his real work has come in the field of organisation and discipline.
He described the Bernabeu massacre as 'one of the best days of my footballing life'. He has effectively won the title with that soul-destroying victory on enemy territory; and now his players can continue the club's remarkable renaissance by disposing of Chelsea at the Bridge.
For when Hiddink's men seek to attack, as the fans will surely demand, there will be space to exploit all over the field - and there is no one better in that situation than this season's Barca vintage who know that a score draw will see them through.
They will not have 70 per cent-plus possession in West London, Chelsea will not roll over and are more than capable of scoring: witness the non-existent marking for the two Real goals.
Yet Barcelona will be freer to dance with the ball in the final third on English turf than they were at home; and they have already proved that when the chips are down, they can go for the jugular whether they have the ball or not - and emerge victorious.

I WILL ADVISE CHELSEA F.C TO WITHDRAW, APOLOIZE TO ITS FANS AND FIFA FOR CONFRONTING THE STRONG AND UNBEATIBLE F.C. BARCELONA (HEN CAN NOT MEASURE HEIGHT WITH AN EAGLE). BECAUSE, BY THE POWEER OF GOD THE CUP IS ALREADY IN BARCELONA (SPAIN).I´M BARCELONA FAN, WE ARE WAITING FOR THE DAY TO CELEBRATE IT. TODAY´S MATCH IS GOING TO BE 1-4.
CHELSEA F.C SHOULD WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR. I LOVE CHELSEA F.C, MY CHELSEA FRIENDS AND FANS, SEE YOU NEXT YEAR. THANKS.
hey Varnavas, My team are the best, and they win trophies, Manchester, Capital of trophies !!!!!
''Just look at how Barnsley trumped Chelsea in the FA Cup a year ago, and Liverpool before them; no one then complained of ultra-defensive tactics, and nor should they have.''.... I don't think that Chelsea is so weak compared to Barca as Barnsley is to Chelsea and Liverpool, so it's normal that no one complained but when a team like Chelsea comes to Camp Nou and they don't leave their OWN HALF then they don't deserve any respect, this were no genius defensive tactics by Hidding, that was pure anti football, every team comes to defend to Camp Nou, we have seen this hundred times before but in more than 10 years since I'm Barca fan I've never seen so pathetic team in my whole life!!!!!
i am a barca fan and i'd love to see my team qualify for rome final.but lets not forget that at the beginning of the season barca's priority was the league. and that shouldn't be forgotten. guardiola just does magnificent job all throughout the season. barca simply plays the best football in planet. on the other hand chelsea is the most physical strong side in the world. if we be knocked out, as a barca fan i will be dissappointed but just look at what barca managed to do this season after being criticed for the guardiola choice of coach. best teams do not always win trophies. we must accept that and keep on going. visca el barca
Great article
What a good match to watch.THE BEAUTY(BARCA)AGAINST THE BEAST(CHELSEA).The only fear in my heart now is how damaging Chelsea players can be to the finest players in the world with their beast-like football. They almost destroy these guys of Barca last week with very wild and destructive style of play.

matr, right you are that two leagues can't be compared. and regardless of how a team has been playing that is no guarantee that they will win a particular game. i mean we couldn't win against southend, we lost to burnsley, but that doesn't mean that burnsley are better than us. on that day they were better that's it nothing more nothing less. same here. barcelona are by far the favorites to win any trophy judging the way they play football. respect to that, and i wish we could play like that but we cant. no english team ever can. but even though they enter as favorites, and deserving of the best team in the world, football is a game that lasts 90 minutes at least and the ball is round. the best team doesn't necessarily win. and that's the beauty of the sport, it's drama at its best. i expect a hard game, with chances from both teams controlling the game over different intervals. i want chelsea to win, but anything can happen. surely it won't be a manchester arsenal kind of game.
This a good article, well-written and astute. For all their technichal brilliance, the lack of Puyol and Marquez could prove their achilles heel though, as Barca may find it hard to stifle Chelsea's power in attack - especially from high balls and set pieces, which the last goals from Higuain and Ramos clearly demonstrated. May the best team win!
great messi!!!!It was said he just enjoyed hot dating with a rich black female on "M i l l i 0 n a i r e l 0 v e s . coo 00 m"
I will put my money on barcelona......cuz in opinion thier the best in the world 2-1 barca.
ot another all English final please - Go on Barca knock Abromovitch on his @#$%
Want barc to win and then they can stuff utd in the final. it would shut them man scum up by saying we will win everything this season. I cannot see chelsea stopping them but good look anyway.
Finally a respectable blogger, someone intelligent in this place chears also to you my friend and may the best team win
i certainly would agree with most people here that from paper barca are already through to the final but unfortunately i do not accept it. I am a fulham fan and a neighbour to chelsea whom we played last. Barca's 6-2 triumph at real madrid was not a surprise after all real madrid had to come out risk attack to secure a win to give themselves a chance to the championship, nothing less than that. it had to be that way or never for them unfortunately it was never as for now.
But what i want every body to note is chelsea , fulham and real madrid are in very different leagues and therefore those results don't compare to the likely outcome tonight. Chelsea and barca have what it takes to fix things in different styles and that is football but for me having seen chelsea against juventus and barca against bayern and valencia, i am left with only one mind set that chelsea will be in rome for the final and toment the demons of st.petersburg for the championship. "Mark my words"
Finally a respectable blogger cheers my friend and may the best team win.
