Championship - Jones given backing

Eurosport - Wed, 06 May 11:24:00 2009

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has thrown his support behind manager Dave Jones and insists he will remain in charge despite the club missing out on a play-off place.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Championship Cardiff City Jones - 0

The Bluebirds, who had been in the top six for the majority of the season, were pipped to the post by Preston by the small matter of just one goal on the final day with points and goal difference level.

Some supporters, former players and the local press have since called for change in the managerial hot seat. But Ridsdale has announced Jones, who is the Championship's longest serving manager, is going nowhere having guided the club to their highest league finish for 38 years.

In a statement on the club's official website, Ridsdale said: "Football is a curious business. After 38 years of underachievement, we get to within one goal of reaching the play-offs to compete for promotion to the Premier League and the knives are out for scapegoats.

"Dave Jones has done an outstanding job since he took over as manager. He has made mistakes, of course he has, haven't we all? The true test however is that he has got more things right than wrong and we are stronger for that.

"To kill all the speculation before it goes any further. Dave Jones is the manager of Cardiff City football club and will remain so. With myself and my colleagues on the board, Dave will spend the summer months learning the lessons from the season just ended and we will take appropriate decisions about the strengths and weaknesses in the playing squad so that we enter next season stronger than we ended this."

  1. Why do we have every Swansea fan making a comment about Cardiff when they did not finish higher in the league and dont have bigger crowds?? whats all that about?...Swansea had a good first season in the championship...but so did Colcester, Scunthorpe,Southend etc but where are they now? why do Swansea fans think that because they had one resonable season it gives then the right to comment as if they were some sort of football gods!...get a grip please ...............

  7. If you take out the emotion and look whats been acheived over the last 5 years then it puts it all in perspective. 1) New Stadium. 2) FA cup final runners up 3) Best league position in the last 38 YEARS. 4) New training facilities 5) Acadamy teams 6) Positive Revenue in transfer dealings 7).....finished higher in the league then Swansea .

I have followed Cardiff for over 40 years and i still find the Cardiff fans to be unbelievably over optimistic about how well the team should be doing and forget far too easily what the bad old days were like ...in the 4th division in front of 3k fans playing Rochdale for example.
We dont get 20k fans every week so why do we think we are a big club? it yesterdays dream...not todays. Its time for so called City fans to grow up and stop whinging and be constructive. The only constructive comment i could make is that D Jones kept playing Parry and even Ledley despite what ever poor form they were in. He had the best squad in years but failed to use it particulary E Johnson and R Scimica. He will have to learn from that or he will face the conseqences next season.

Peter Ridsdale would back him because in all his career,he has backed loser,Cardiff will always be in the lower divisons like ridsdale last team LEEDS UNITED,lets not see cardiff goe like leeds
