Cech gets Mowbray backing

West Brom boss Tony Mowbray has underlined his faith in defender Marek Cech who could make only his third Barclays Premier League appearance for the club against visiting Wigan on Saturday.

Cech is in line to replace regular left-back Paul Robinson if he fails to recover from the ankle problem suffered during last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Tottenham.

The Baggies are still awaiting the results of a scan on the long-serving Robinson but Mowbray is confident Slovakia international Cech, signed from FC Porto last summer, would prove an able deputy.

Mowbray said: "Marek is a player at our club that, when he's had an opportunity, has done very well for us. He has been very unfortunate in the fact that I've chosen Paul Robinson at left-back rather than him.

"Whether he agrees with it or is happy with it - that's been the scenario. If Paul isn't available then Marek is naturally the next choice but we'll wait and see what Paul's prognosis is."

Mowbray admitted: "There's an obvious disappointment from Marek about his current situation. But he's a contracted footballer who works hard in training and maintains his fitness. When an opportunity for him to play comes along he's got to perform. That's the same with a lot of players on the outside of the team. They've got to work hard to keep pushing - and Marek is no different."

  3. Cech should have been given more chances. He has impressed when he has played. This is one of Mowbrays mistakes, for those who will attack this comment! But he has kept faith in too many, when others deserved an opportunity (Dorrans, Cech adn maybe Worrall)
