David Beckham claims he has been assured by Steve McClaren that he will keep his place in the England squad if he maintains his best form. The 32-year-old proved his worth to the national team yet again on Wednesday when he laid on two goals in the 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win in Estonia.
The LA Galaxy-bound midfielder even played through the pain barrier, having twisted his left ankle in the first half in Tallinn.
Beckham, whose crosses set up Crouch and Owen for England's second-half goals, said: "It's been nice to get back with the lads - there's a great atmosphere in team.
"We've scored some good goals tonight and played some good football - confidence is gradually coming back in the team.
"Hopefully we've put ourselves in a better position now - but we need to carry on playing.
"I'd love to be in the next squad and Steve (McClaren) has made that clear - if I'm performing and playing like I've been playing recently, I'll be in the squad.
"Of course there's always pressure about staying in the team and winning your position - but am I on trial? I'm not sure about that.
"I always enjoy playing for my country and I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks - so let's see what happens."
Now Beckham returns to Spain, where title-chasing Real Madrid take on Real Zaragoza on Saturday in their penultimate La Liga match.
And he continued on Sky Sports: "I've got a big game on Saturday - but tonight was the only thing I was thinking about.
"Now my head is on the game on Saturday - I twisted my ankle tonight and it was painful - but I'm sure it's fine."
