Beckham starred on his competitive return for his country, setting up two goals with trademark crosses from the right wing, and felt the whole team contributed to a solid if unspectacular victory.

"We did the job tonight," Beckham told SkySports. "We enjoyed the game, we scored some goals and we played good football at times.

"Confidence is coming back to the players and so it should.

"We've got some of the best players in the world and we've put ourselves in a good position to qualify."

Beckham came off later in the match, nursing a twisted ankle picked up early in the match but played down the injury and thinks he should be fine for Real Madrid's must-win match at Real Zaragoza.

"I've got a big game on Saturday but tonight was the only thing I was thinking about," he admitted.

"I should be fine (for Saturday), I twisted my ankle but it should be okay."

There has been continued speculation as to whether Beckham will feature in the rest of England's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign due to his American adventure starting in July, with many doubting he will be able to cope with the long-haul travel and lower level of football. Boss Steve McClaren refused to be drawn on the question, while the player himself insisted that he would be in the frame should he continue in his current vein of good form.

"I'd love to be in the next squad," the 32-year-old declared on participating in a series of matches that would take him past the 100-cap mark.

"Steve's made it clear that if I'm performing and I've been playing like recently then I'll be in the squad.

"There's always pressure [regarding England] but [would Beckham be] 'on trial'? I don't know about that."
