Group A

Poland lost valuable points when they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat in Armenia, although they still remain five points clear at the top of Group A.

Hamlet Mkhitaryan fired a free kick into the top corner in the 70th minute to give the home team their second win in seven games.

Goals from Jonatan Johansson and Alexei Eremenko saw Finland earn a 2-0 victory at home to Belgium and move into joint second in the group with Serbia and Portugal, although the Finns have played a game more.

They have 14 points now, and trail Poland by five points, but Belgium, who had Marouane Fellaini sent-off, now look doomed on just seven points from eight games.

Meanwhile, 10-man Kazakhstan came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 home draw with Azerbaijan.

Group B

Scotland did their part by winning 2-0 in the Faroe Islands but their main rivals also came through tests to make it "as you were" in the group.

Italy had a tough test on paper but Sampdoria striker Fabio Quagliarella scored twice to earn the world champions a 2-0 victory in Lithuania.

The 23-year-old lashed home from the edge of the box with his left foot after 31 minutes and then scored with a dipping effort just before halftime to settle Italy's nerves after a difficult start.

Lithuania, who drew 1-1 in Italy in September, had matched the Italians in the early stages but lost their way after going behind.

Meanwhile, French wonderkid Samir Nasri grabbed the only goal in Auxerre as France defeated Georgia 1-0 to stay top of the group.

The Marseille midfielder, voted the league's best young player this season and superb in Saturday's 2-0 win over Ukraine, struck in the 33rd-minute of a one-sided contest.

France now have 18 points from seven games and lead second-placed Italy by two points.

Group C

Defending champions and group leaders Greece needed a goal from Nikos Liberopoulos three minutes into stoppage to earn a 2-1 win over bottom side Moldova in Heraklion.

A Viorel Frunza strike 10 minutes from time had looked to have earned Moldova a shock point as it cancelled out Angelos Charisteas' opener before Liberopoulos stole the points.

Norway got their qualification hopes back on track with a crushing 4-0 home victory over Hungary.

Aston Villa striker John Carew scored twice for the Norwegians, while former Tottenham man Stefan Iversen was also on the scoresheet.

While, Zlatan Muslimovic's goal in the sixth minute proved to be the only goal of the game as Bosnia defeated Malta in Sarajevo.

Group D

Germany scraped a 2-1 win over Slovakia to move five points clear in Group D and take another stride towards qualifying for Euro 2008.

Germany took an early lead when Jan Durica put the ball into his own net, under pressure from Miroslav Klose, but another own goal, this time from Germany's Christoph Metzelder, levelled the scores in the 20th minute.

Thomas Hitzlsperger gave Germany the lead back two minutes before half-time with a fine header and the home side held on in a poor second half to make it six wins from seven games.

Group E

England enjoyed a good night as while they were beating Estonia 3-0 in Tallinn, Croatia and Russia were playing out a 0-0 draw in Zagreb.

Steve McClaren's men are still playing catch-up though as goals in either half from Toto Tamuz and Roberto Colautti saw Israel win 2-0 in terrible conditions in Andorra to remain second in the group.

Group F

Northern Ireland's qualification bid suffered a blow without them even playing as rivals Sweden, Spain, and Denmark all chalked up victories.

Sweden demolished visitors Iceland 5-0 helped by two goals from striker Marcus Allback to move top of the group. Anders Svensson, Olof Mellberg and Markus Rosenberg got the other goals.

The Swedes, who are awaiting UEFA's verdict on the outcome of their abandoned qualifying game with Denmark last weekend, grabbed the lead in the 11th minute and never looked back, taking all three points to top the group on 16 points.

Denmark's difficult week ended with a nervous victory over Latvia thanks to two goals in two minutes from Dennis Rommedahl in the 15th and 17th minutes.

Meanwhile, David Villa scored two early goals but missed an injury time penalty for his hat-trick as Spain won 2-0 in Liechtenstein.

Villa put Spain ahead in the eighth minute when he slotted home from a tight angle after rounding the keeper and took his tally to 12 goals in 23 games with a spectacular overhead kick soon after.

Group G

Romania took advantage of Holland only being in friendly action to move alone at the top of the group thanks to a 2-0 home victory over Slovenia.

Adrian Mutu gave the Romanians the lead in the 40th minute with Cosmin Contra sealing the points mid-way through the second-half.

Bulgaria are still in the hunt for a qualification place as they recovered from going an early goal down to beat Belarus 2-1 at home.

Roman Vasilyuk fired home a penalty after only five minutes to give the visitors a surprise lead but Martin Petrov soon levelled matters before Chavdar Yankov got what proved to be the winning strike five minutes before half-time.

Meanwhile, Edmond Kapllani scored twice as Albania enjoyed a 3-0 win in Luxembourg.
