FA Cup - FA want 'six-plus-five' for Cup

Eurosport - Fri, 06 Jun 14:54:00 2008

FA chairman Lord Triesman may try to turn the FA Cup into a breeding ground for English talent if Sepp Blatter's 'six-plus-five' bid falls short.

2007-2008 FA Cup Portsmouth - 0

Triesman is unconvinced that the FIFA president's motion to impose a quota of homegrown players on clubs could ever make it past European Union anti-discrimination laws.

But in an attempt to allay concerns that the flow of English youngsters is drying up due to an influx of foreign players, he is ready to begin drawing up plans to increase the number of Britons involved in the FA's flagship tournament.

"The FA Cup is directly within our domain and if we want to implement change we need to do that in conjunction with the Premier League and Football League," he said.

"Whether there are legal restraints or not there can be a means of implementing an optimum number of English players participating in the FA Cup.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has come out in support of this, stating his view that there should be more English players in major club competitions, and conceivably, there could be.

"Of course, it's very dangerous to try to enforce a minimum number of English players - but it can be achieved in ways other than enforcement."

  1. What r the FA goin on about.I hope this isn't gonna b another of their unsuccessful attempts 2 have more English players playin for there clubs. They will b overruled by the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea who don't even give a damn about their youth players.

  3. What a waster 6+5. Records- good teams of Euro2008 and before were assembled in their various home countries from their own foreign based players, so why this hoola halla about indegenous? Time onset if English players delivered the standards no one else would call to their shores to play football. What about the boom in the fat accounts of clubs that come with the foreign influx? Get rid of this and England is home with herself. What about the fame and followership of EPL worldwide? How come it if not via foreign? I think the English should show, ambition not pride. The english press should beware of over celeberating their youth footballers in their prime and kill them off the game too early.

  4. YES YES YES! ENGLISH FOOTBALL NEEDS THIS KIND OF THINKING! Some are right to say that its more about money than anything, but lets take this tourmanment & The Carling Cup & give our lads the chance to SHINE. It may ba a bit controversial but I think you will find after a season or two that it Really Makes Sense. Forget politics, remember ENGLISH FOOTBALL.

  5. There are too many foreigners in English Football its got sod all to do with the qaulity of the football its just about the money

limit them and watch our England team benefit Look at the likes of the Italians they limited the foreign influence and within 5 years won the world cup less foreign mercenaries more home grown talent the likes of Hooker Fooker Nani and The winker of the clinker will be be un skilled labourers in the fifth division compared to the talent we could produce if we just restored pride, belief and time on our own youngsters

The likes Of Benitez (ruining the liverpool legacy) Wenger (Decimated Young north Londoners) and no doubt scolari need limiting or reining in in some way before we have atop three teams of all foreign 2nd raters and no brits

  6. The Carling Cup is nothing but an interuption to major teams. The only good it brings is the 1st team experience of our reserve side. All bar one player was a second string or reserve player in MU's exit loss at OT in the carling cup. Big woop. Introducing it into the still 'last gasp' FA cup comp will just bring a quicker death to the credibility of the comp. And why are UEFA looking to make the european cup as equal as the CL. Every body know's it isn't. Don't force something that isn't there. I believe the side's that finish outside the 4 (or 2) in some leagues should have this to look forward to like everton and man city. It add's great value to local comps and teams like Bayern Munich and now AC MIlAN will use it to get right back into CL football.

  9. it's SAD that this is probably the ONLY way to show home grown TALENT by barring OR limiting foreign players then SO be it we need an ENGLAND team WE can ALL support & believe in now euro 2008 is over NEXT stop world cup 2010 !!!!!

  10. The plan is an act of racism, its xenophobic and intolerance by the English FA and I guess the FIFA Prsident is bringing to bare the racism in his homeland to the football world. What of players like fabregas,Denilson,Cronaldo,Anderson and Nani that left there homeland for greener pastures. The english FA should support there young lads to do likewise.(Go Abroad) Where is Switzerland in World football? As host they cant even qulify from the group stage of Euro 2008. So FIFA should use country performance to appoint the President of FIFA then too. "Sepp flattred"

  12. 6+5 = lack of competition, lack of beauty, lack of attractiveness, lack of thick fanbase.
6+5= lack of Fabregas, Tores, Drogba, Ronaldo, Van der Saad, etc.

  13. It is a real pity that the English FA is also joining Fifa to plan towards removing the competitiveness and beauty of English football. You think Fifa is happy that English teams are dominating the scenes in champions league every season. No! It has now come out with strategy to make the game in EPL less competitive by giving quota to the number of foreign players per match.
It is not a hidden fact the before the influx of foreign players to England, the game was boring, not this competitive and attractive. But their presence has made the games beautify, attractive and competitive. It has also drastically changed the pattern of the game.
The followership of English football is growing by the seconds because of the presence of foreign players. If this 6+5 plan plays in the FA Cup, or in the game, foreign stars will drop, the beauty and competitiveness of the game in Englan will also drop. We will also see the effect come next Chapions League.
So I am totally surprised that the English FA is bringing the 6+5 to their competition. The competition will lack passion becaue the stars that people would like to watch are not playing. Clubs with majority foreign players like Arsenal, Leverpool and Chelsea will not take the competition serious any longer, and when those teams are not there with their stars, guess what. And these teams make up English League.
I also see this ploy as that against teams like Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea whose players base are made up majorly by foreign players. Man U is at advantage, no wonder Alex is subscribing and seriously too.
No body should attribute the woes of England not participating in Euro 2008 to the numerous foreign players in the league. No. Their numbers has even helped the game to be competitive, making the English players more serious to get a starting lineup in their respective clubs. If the 6+5 system survives, the English players will relax and become less serious. This will affect the national team the more.
So FA, you better think and rescind your surpost for 6+5 Fifa anti-fan project.

  15. this will just result in the FA cup becoming even less important to clubs, the clubs will just use it to give their young players first team experience, the loophole in the 6+5 rule will mean more and more young players being bought in from worldwide and the FA cup will be where they play, a poor idea
