PARIS (AFP) - Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-2 in an all-Russian final of the French Open on Saturday to take away her second Grand Slam title.
It was a comprehensive win for the 23-year-old seventh seed who lost in the final here in 2006 to Justine Henin two years after she stunned the world of tennis by winning the US Open as a 19-year-old.

For Safina it was a crushing way to end a two-week-long campaign geared at securing a first Grand Slam title and proving that she is a worthy of the world number one spot.
It was the second straight year she has lost in the final here going down in straight sets to Ana Ivanovic of Serbia last year and her second successive Grand Slam final defeat having lost to Serena Williams in Melbourne this year.
"It was so many years since I won a Grand Slam and I thought it would never happen again," Kuznetsova said.
"Today when I was coming onto the court I knew everything was going to be fine. It was the same as before when I won the US Open."
It was the 14th time the two had met as professionals, Safina leading 8-5, but they go further back than that having been rivals in Russia in girls' tournaments as they were growing up.
With conditions cold, damp and overcast and the Court Philippe Chatrier three-quarters full, Safina was quickest out of the blocks breaking Kuznetsova to 15.
But the younger of the two 23-year-olds surrendered that advantage immediately with a nervy service game that included a double fault and two unforced errors.
Safina was in trouble on serve again at 2-3 down when a double fault and a deft Kuznetsova drop shot left her at 0-30, but she came out on top of a marathon rally and then took the next three points to level the score.
Two games later though and on the back of another double fault, the Muscovite went 0-40 down. She saved the first two of those breakpoints but was left flat-footed by a raking Kuznetsova backhand drive on the third.
The St Petersburg-born player, however, failed to cash in, dropping her serve for the second time in the next game.
That mattered little though as she struck again in the following game, staggering Safina by running round her backhand to hit an outright winner and then forcing the world No.1 into slapping a forehand into the net.
Kuznetsova held serve to open the second set and Safina was beginning to berate herself for allowing her smaller and less powerful rival for the crown to dominate most of their rallies.
Games went with serve until the sixth game when a sixth double fault gave Kuznetsova the edge and she broke for the fourth time in the match shortly after when Safina blasted a forehand wide and long.
Kuznetsova held serve to make it 5-2 and then her pressure on the Safina serve paid dividends again with a seventh double fault on match point.
It was all over in 74 minutes and was the eighth consecutive straight sets women's final at Roland Garros.
Safina said that she had put too much pressure on herself as she had wanted to win so much.
"I just didn't handle it," she said.
"I was a little bit desperate on the court. I didn't stay tough mentally.
"She gave me chances and was not as aggressive as she usually is. I just didn't do anything. I lost the match myself."

Bravo Svetlana! You are so modest girl, but great player, and now you proved that to all. It is a pity you could not enjoy your second title there as anyone would do at your place. Go on like this for Fortuna is on your side finally.
aeronick2000 it is not Serena going on about it (one comment is NOT going on about anything) but her detractors and her bragging supporters who should both just let the matter drop. Serena knows she is no. 2 by ranking but, of course like all great champions still think of herself as the best. There is no point in competing at that level if you don't have this belief.
Mike P it is not the time to be cruel to a loveable tennis player. She had amassed enough ranking points to be accepted as the no. 1 player and it is not fair to keep bringing this issue up. Commiserations Dinara and i know it is a matter of time only before you do win a deserved major open. Congratulations to Sveta who came up with the goods on the day. Well played.
Personally, I admire people who aim for the skies and attempt to fly, which is Safina does. I think too much emphasis is put on winning a Slam. Rather, winning a Slam is the seal of approval for a great player. Where on earth is Ivanovic? What about Juan Carlos Fereirro? They've won Slams and but they didnt turn out to be great players. True, Safina has choked in three finals and Serena can say what she wants, but the rankings say Safina is the best female tennis player, based on consistency. There is too much talk, and too much nerves, Serena should step up and take the number one ranking from Safina, or shut up. Safina wasn't given the number one ranking by default. She worked for it, I don't know proof Mike wants. And as long as Safina keeps competing at the highest level and finds a way to block out the pressure, it will happen for her and it won't be once.
I agree, after beating Serena, Svetlana deserves the title. Poor Safina who lost the second time in the French Open final and also the second consecutive Grand Slam final defeat in 2009 after losing to Serena in the Australian Open. No wonder she cries! Haha! I think Safina cannot prove that she deserves the No.1 ranking after losing so many times in Grand Slam finals! I think Safina is out already and she will never ever win a Grand Slam in future!
Safina can only win useless smaller tournaments. When she is in grand slam finals. She is always blown away by the eventual Champions! Why should the world respect Safina? This will only spark more criticism over her nos 1 ranking.
Congrats Svetlana....you deserved it!
Well done too Safina....you are more poised in losing than RF!
