World number two Roger Federer kept his dream of a maiden French Open title alive when he battled past Argentine fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro 3-6 7-6(2) 2-6 6-1 6-4 in a nail-biting semi-final on Friday.
The Swiss, playing in his 20th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final, was one set from defeat when he turned on the style to set up a final with Swede Robin Soderling, who ushered out four-times champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round.
"I am a bit lucky but I fought," said Federer, who will on Sunday equal Ivan Lendl's record of 19 Grand Slam final appearances.
"I have an outstanding record against him (Soderling) but he played a fantastic match against (Fernando) Gonzalez," he added after the Swede earlier won in five sets against the Chilean.
"He (Soderling) has a lot of credit since he is the one who knocked out Rafa, who was the man to beat in this tournament," added the 13-times Grand Slam champion, who has defeated the Swede in all their nine previous encounters.
Del Potro, playing in his first grand slam semi-final, was disappointed to have wasted a good chance of beating Federer.
"If it had been in the best of three sets, I would have won and I would have come out of that court satisfied," he said.
"Right now, I don't have enough words to explain what I feel. That match just escaped me."
Federer, looking to equal Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles, got off to a miserable start as Del Potro relied on his big serve and punishing forehand to dictate the play.
Backed by a 15,000 capacity Centre Court crowd, he prevailed after three hours 29 minutes on his second match point to book his place in a fourth consecutive final on the Paris clay.
Federer had started confidently, moving Del Potro around the court and setting up two break chances in the second and fourth games.
The Argentine saved them with an ace and a service winner before taking control of the match, stepping into the court to dominate the points.
He broke for 3-2 when Federer netted a forehand and the same error from the Swiss in the ninth game gave Del Potro the first set after 38 minutes.
The 20-year-old Argentine had never taken a set from Federer in their five previous matches.
The Swiss forced a tiebreak in the second after all games went with serve and that is when he showed glimpses of his brilliant best.
He won the tiebreak 7-2 when Del Potro sent a forehand long, triggering a prolonged roar from the crowd.
It failed to unsettle the towering Argentine, who broke in the first game of the third set and continued to look comfortable on his service games.
At 15-15 in the seventh game, it looked like Federer was warming Del Potro up at the net, simply feeding the Argentine with the ball instead of finding a passing shot.
Del Potro won the game when Federer sent a chipped forehand long. As the clock ticked past the two-hour mark, the Argentine bagged the set, his Swiss opponent firing a forehand wide.
Federer then started to mix up his game with sliced shots and was rewarded for his tactical change when the Argentine dropped serve in the fourth game of the fourth set by firing a forehand long to the delight of the partisan fans.
He broke again in the sixth game, following up on serve to send the contest into an unpredictable decider.
With his teeth now sinking firmly into his prey, Federer stole his opponent's serve in the first game of the fifth set as Del Potro's game continued to crumble.
The Argentine briefly regained his poise in time to break back for 3-3, only to drop serve again with a double fault.
Federer could sense victory and kept his composure.
Del Potro saved one match point on his own serve but was helpless on the second when Federer followed a big first serve with a forehand winner to end the match.

Comment 196 - 215 of 215
and re your comment that those who are tennis players will know... i am curious as to what kind of tennis player you imagine yourself to be probably one who lacks the talent to even get to the challenger tour.
while i do not play "pro tennis" i have played varsity tennis in both my high school and my university in the USA which as many will know is a very competitive sports sector and quite frankly have never met people who are as full of hatred as you are except for those who though on the team were simply not good enough to be allowed to play unless the tie had already been won
since you feel the need to keep posting this hateful email and eurosport is not taking it off the site, i feel the need to repost my response:
robertxxx... i find it very surprising that you can speak of a tennis player's ettiquette and then spout off the kind of nonsense that you did in your post!
federer may be conceited, after all he really is the best tennis player of all time. people who are so much better than their peers often have some arrogance to them and to say something like connors and mcenroe and even sampras did not "brag" shows that you really did not watch much television, particularly when they were being interviewed by their fellow americans.
as for the even older tennis players, well tennis was not exactly a sport to brag to the world about back then but now people who don't know the basic scoring system of tennis will still know that federer is its king.
and to call federer a sore loser is astonishing to me... the man cried (which shows that he cares) and through tears praised nadal after the Aussie Open Final... and let's not forget nadal who is also an amazing athlete and one of the all time greates cried too.
to yell and occasionally throw a racket after a losing point is fairly normal though not that typical of federer and well you can't possibly be criticizing that kind of behaviour since the names of the greats you listed included some of the rudest, nastiest and most quite franly unsportmanlike athletes to ever grace a tennis court.
robertxxx111, you sad sad sad individual --- enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hvala brate, hvala ;-)
Igore... Mnogo seresh brate....
@geekwiglasses - you very nicely described Federer, and I agree bigger part !
@ boow - I can not describe in English precisely , it’s not my birth language.. but in one sentence: if you don’t` give to many short balls to Federer (let him playing).. he is in trouble.. you must not let him dictate his tempo.. Now this is of course formula for every player, and I didn’t discover America with this.. but Federer seems to me having much more trouble with deep balls then other top 4 players..
OK then, let the better guy win this: let us see Federer in his best this season, and Soderling in his best this season..
! But I’m afraid something will happen.. Federer must win this, and I think most people here are well aware if Soderling just plays near his best from this RG, this Federer has no great chance + pressure he will fear, for instance if he loose first set.
Why ? because Sodeling showed he has no respect, he has no fear.. he will play like hell if the match is regular one to take his madden GS ! No Federer can force him to play different - not this Federer !
I think some people will arrange that Big headline shows Monday morning in the press (not Federer of course).... you know how things works in the world !
Some said there is no justice, and they are right.. I would personally congratulate Fed for winning GS if he disserved it ! But I see all this more as a despair of his fans to prove something that is long gone out of his hands !
He is aware that he wouldn’t win this besides Murray, Nadal, Novak… only one ball saved him against Hass.. Others falling like leafs, not having belief ..
I could never imagine Federer greater than Sampras, or even Agasi.. these are the real legends ! Fed is the most elegant for me, nothing else !
Igor, you are really bothering many people with you really strange logics. You are not disturbed that players are collapsing when they play Nadal, don't you. And Fed being lucky - oh boy, give us all a break. Fed was lucky for how many years now? Look at the draws Fed has for many tournaments and Nadal does, who is lucky. Nadal has walkovers many more times etc. You just are trying to refuse to accept that Fed is a brilliant player, regardless of some losses and lapses. And justice - well, these comments don't deserve to be discussed actually. People who do understand by far more from tennis say that Fed is the best and has the game to beat more or less everybody, he has the personality tennis could only dream about etc. But IgorK has his own logics, regardless that he is in very tiny minority!!!
Igor, what do you mean by justice? I really wonder if you read yourself! What justice are you talking about? whether he sends long balls in the sky most often (which is in no way true), is it not up to the other guys to make him commit faults? I think you are really becoming strange in the way you reason it out here on Federer! Is it his fault if some players can't beat him? Is it his fault that his serve is too good for others? And who says other players can't beat him? Who says he is not fair in his game? Federer is THE most complete player in tennin at the moment and all specialists reckon it! Even Nadal is not as versatile as he is in his game!
"I say no way Federer can win this playing fair !" - And how un-fair is he playing?
"I said that his game is easy to disrupt, nothing special besides huge elegance which is blinding people.." And why haven't you yet passed that secret to other players you so much support? Elegance blinding people? What has that got to do with the game in itself?
"Easy to disrupt if you know how.. sand him some long balls and he launches it in the sky most of the time, even after short rally.. "- Oh, I thought I saw hundreds of long balls sent to him and I don't think I saw hundreds of launches in the sky? Now, did u watch the match? hahahaha!!!
Please call the other players and tell them that secret of long balls, am sure they will be able to beat him this time - only....they have tried that formula already and unless u want to make urself more ridiculous, keep up with that ur "fair" and "justice" bogus!
"whatever guys, i just hope he wins tomorow so that we have a happy peacefull world."
ralph r,I think exactly the same.Roger fans will not be happy until he manages to win RG and until that time, they will continue to attack Rafa and other players. So,as a Rafa fan,I hope he wins tomorrow and the case will be closed forever...
Sorry igor k but i dont think your right at all........your simply confusing a batch of poor games due to a lack in concentration/confidence within a match ,with simply having a weak game. Its not the same at all....when judging a players game you have to look at the big picture, and overall federers game is sumblime and very few can touch him.
Yes on a bad day he struggles out wide, and gets caught out with unforced errors from the baseline, but when he is revved up and purring he has easily the best a)shotmaking ability b)forehand winners c)1st serves d) 2nd serves e) net play......the list goes on.
Yes i thought the semi was his worst display since the 2008 wimbledon final, where he looked in very bad form all the way through the game
But lets not forget when he picks up at the end, it was like he was a different player........not "hitting it sky high at the baseline" or any other points you picked out.
Federers game is the same game its always been, he has just lost confidence over the last 2 years.....and ANY player will struggle to regein this. Many players would give up in such a situation but fed still went on to win the US open.
why taking that tone ralph?
@boow - "So r u trying to say that Federer does not win cleanly? That he cheats?"
No I`m not saying that he cheats, oh My God ?!
I said that his game is easy to disrupt, nothing special besides huge elegance which is blinding people..
Easy to disrupt if you know how.. sand him some long balls and he launches it in the sky most of the time, even after short rally.. did you watch the match really ? some guys knows very good how to play him, some are still learning, and on god way - like Del Po and others ! But have to belive they can win Federer !
So I’m not saying that he cheats, he was great great player of course but I pray for justice here.. let the better guy win this: let us see Federer in his best this season, and Soderling in his best this season..
I say no way Federer can win this playing fair !
He and his team are ready for everything, be advised.. this IS life or death for Federer ! he will never ever have such opportunity in his life, especially not on RG anymore !
lol carlos
whatever guys, i just hope he wins tomorow so that we have a happy peacefull world.
Igor, the record books will show Federer to be the greatest player of all time.Nobody will ever remember the bitter and sad Igor k.
Igor,grow up.
Igor K
Federer's tactics like what? If Soderling beat the other players squarely, how did Roger beat his opponents? So r u trying to say that Federer does not win cleanly? That he cheats? Look, it is one thing not to support a player but it is another thing not to like him. I don't support Nadal but I like him. If you hate federer, then I understand why u are saying all these rubbish talks here. whether you like it or not, say what you like, Federer is far above Nadal and other present players! I am not saying they are not good, the are far from being good but so far, we've only seen Nadal taking his place and apart from his clay court, he had won Wimbledon and Aussie Open. Federer is way above them and to know a deep of form or that other players improve is only normal for him, as he couldn't be on top forever!
The better player does not always win, but yesterday, it is difficult to say Delpo was the better player throughout the match. He was better in the 1st and 3rd sets and some part of the second set he was equal to Roger. But 4th and 5th sets he was below Roger! The boy played very very well but someone played better than him! Roger deserved to be in this final and it is not a matter of luck. Nobody should underestimate the huge progress of Delpo and to think that it was gonna be an easy match with Roger was delusional (and Roger had said it was gonna be a tough match!).
It’s sad how some very good players are just falling down beneath on their knees in front of Federer. This guy is just lucky this season, especially this RG !
Almost every rally with 4-5 hits, where Del Potro was hitting near base line Fed was kicking wide ? Did only I see this or others have eyes to see that Fed`s game is really nothing special for a long time, except still very good serves that is saving him, and nice one handed backhand ? of course pure elegance he has ! His game is easy to disrupt if some knows how.. just give him long balls and he can do nothing special about it.. that thing knows very well Djokovic, Murray is forcing his backends– also good plan to drive him mad, Nadal just crashes him flying around with enormous stamina he has..
DelPo had Federer in his hands and he just slipped !
It was not Federer who won this, it was DelPo who lost it..! Fed is unbelievable lucky, and for how many times on this RG ? And all opponents that would surely kicked him on clay are gone ! Please don’t say that Fed did something enormous to make better result in fourth set of this match.. DelPo looked like someone “SWITCH OFF” him ! and It is not fitness !
I say people, If Soderling just plays his average from his good he played here, he will win Federer without much problems ! I can guarantee this !
BUT will Soderling play good ? or he will also just fall like others before him ? People be sure, if you see Soderling not playing good, definitely something not fair has happened ! this is A MUST WIN for Federer ! Soderling will play out of his skin to win his first GS trophy.. he is not the one to fall like many others before, he doesn’t care about Federer `s theatre ! this is the guy who played amazingly against Nadal, Davidenko, Gonsales, beat them fair and square, and disserves more to take this RG ! BUT I think everything is set for Federer now ! People wants to see history.. they want to see BIG headlines.. .
everyone have short memory, sad !
@ Universe you can just pray God he is one slam wonder :-) he played amazing Clay season, that`s were Novak was !
