Nadal out of Queen's, Wimbledon doubt

Eurosport - Sat, 06 Jun 14:44:00 2009

Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal's grass court preparations were thrown into disarray when he was forced to pull out of the traditional warm-up tournament at Queen's Club with a knee injury.

TENNIS Rafa Nadal Roland Garros 2009 - 0

With the grass court Grand Slam due to start in just over two weeks, the Spaniard said he was advised to rest by doctors because he has been struggling with knee problems.

Unless he takes a wildcard into one of the tournaments held in the week preceding the championships, he will turn up at the All England Club without any grass court match practice this year.

"I have been having some problems in the past months with my knees, that's no secret, that did not allow me to compete always at 100 percent," Nadal, whose four-year Roland Garros reign was ended last Sunday by Swede Robin Soderling, said.

"I need to work with my team to recover well, work on my physical condition to be at my top form and get ready for the grass to play at Wimbledon."

Nadal has tuned up for Wimbledon at Queen's in each of the past three years and every time gone on to reach the final of the grass court Grand Slam. Last year he claimed both crowns.

Wimbledon starts on June 22.

  1. I admire your sense of duty to your country, fans,family...but DO take care of yourself first and you will be fit as a fiddle at Wimbledon to lift # 2 trophy !!

  2. I only love tennis because of King Rafa. He managed to make a boring game so interesting. Another thing is that he is so nice, even to his opponents. No sourgraping whatsoever. He is the reason why other players aspire to do their best and try to be at the top. He is a very good role model for the sport.
    I wish you well, Rafa.
Wimbledon might suffer with low attendance and low viewing if Nadal is not around. I don't wish to offend the Federer fans but I do think Nadal has got a lot of charisma compared to the former.

  3. I am still pretty sure that Rafa will play Wimbledon. But maybe he has to change his schedule and maybe (I don't know whether this is possible) his style of playing. This can't do good to his body for the long term! That is why everybody was doubting whether he could stand doing this for years and praised that Roger with the way he is playing can do this for years! That is the difference! And about Murray becoming No1 soon, I would be very cautious with that. He has tons of points in the second part of the year, and Roger can win quite a bit, starting from tomorrow. Lets see and enjoy the best tennis!!!!

  5. Well, the general consensus here is that tennis tournaments are only have the fun without Nadal in them. And, of course, a final where he and Federer meet - does competitive tennis get any better? After many years of absence I started watching tennis again when Rafa appeared on the scene: his style of play, his power and his charisma on the court just blew me away. If Rafa has any serious problems with his knees that would not allow him to compete in the slams and other high power tournaments that would be a great loss to the tennis world and fans of the sport. Even though the French this year was full of surprises and some great matches, the soul of it and the excitement was missing, IMO. I don't even want to think about Wimbledon without Rafa there! Good luck, champ, get well soon and God bless. Hanna43

  7. .. it's not only Nadal who is injured for his style of play. Also Federer has back problems for his style of play..!! For this reason he didn't play Dubai this year. I hope Nada is mentally and physically ok for Wimbledon. Otherwise Wimbledon is going to be very annoying, since there is no other REAL competitor for Federer.
I think the biggest mistake for Rafa is that he plays so many tournaments at the beginning of the year and toooooo many clay tournaments.. He should think about that if he has such problems with his knee..

  9. Isn't nice to watch a men's singles match with no grunting and groaning that Nadal produces. As Sanpras said, Nadal's knees cannnot cope with his style of play. To watch Roger move on court is pure joy. 2008 was a bad year for Roger and in spite of the dangerous mono still managed to get to semis and finals. The very fact that he imploded towards the end of matches till Madrid underlines the problem mono has on the body. Look what mono is doing to Mario Ancic. I have only seen the trainer come on court once for Roger when he had a back problem and certainly has not had blisters on his feet like Nadal. That is due to the different styles. Roger did cry but that shows how much losing his Wimbledon crown meant to him. HE IS THE BEST AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

Prediction for rest of the season....
Wimbledon: Nadal gets knocked out in the first round by world no.108
US Open : pulls out due to Biceps injury(never heard of it eh...nadal the first one to get it)
Year End No.1 - You know Who....I dont need to tell his name...
Eh...Cant sustain the pressure of being number one for even a year...Too bad....

  11. french crowd always cheered against Rafa, because they are losers.French never win nothing in tennis.looooool
Finally Toni reacted like a man.
Next year Rafa will win again to shut up these conceited idiots like in 2008 where we could even listen the crickets
    during federer's destruction.lol

  13. Nadals problem is not only his knees,i usually have high praise for his Uncle Toni, however his recent interview on Catalan radio where he calls the French crowd "stupid" is a public relations disaster for Rafa.To antagonise the Roland Garros crowd is to commit suicide,Rafa needs their support next year, with Toni in his corner he simply wont get it,the crowd will never let him forget it.He also said the French are jealous of Spanish success on French turf, this maybe the case but he has put Rafa in a very difficult position, one for which i feel he should apologize.

  14. what matters most is who will play the the final...
    Grand Slam or not...
    Seeded or unseeded...
they're in the final not because of luck...
BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE DETERMINATION AND WILL TO BE IN THE FINAL.

  15. Nadal's absence is never a good news to tennis fans and the sport in general.Though it may be an opportunity for other players to hope of winning a title this year but it still remains a sad news if Nadal won't be at Wimbledon this year.Yes we have great players though in the likes of Roger,Djokovic,Murray,Del potro,Davidenko,Roddick,Verdasco etc but Nadal is a wonderful spice for the sport.I am a Roger Federer's fan but wishes to see Nadal recover quickly and back on his best form for the sake of tennis even if it means he should miss Queen's but not Wimbledon.
One thing i will like to advice Nadal is that his constant injury is due to the too much strenght he employs in the game. This is really too bad for his future in the ATP tour cos he might retire before the age of 25 if he allows strenght to be his deadliest weapon.

  16. forget the points and which of them is number 1, what's important is for the rivalry to continue... we are so lucky that two amazing athletes and sportsmen are playing tennis at the same time so rafa take and get well soon!

while djokovic and murray are also excellent tennis players for me they simply lack the staying power and well charm and both on and off court courtesy that i prefer to seen in all athletes.

with del potro who is quite the gentleman though he seems to lack a bit of emotive fire, coming up in the ranks nadal, federer and del potro will make a lovely triangle at the top of the tennis game if they can all stay healthy.

and by they way, re mono comment... you europeans really don't understand how insidiously dangerous that ilness is, it's very common in american universities and students who get diagnosed with it are given 6-8 months bed rest and are told that too much physical exertion could kill them.. remember roger actually played the aussie open with mono which had been misdiagnosed so it's unsurprising that it messed up his training and stamina for a very long time.

  17. honeybeecro7, you didn't make one mistake, you made lots.
first. If federer wins he will extend his lead over murray because he will add 600 by winning.
About Nadal, he is going to lose 1820 points in roland garros, and if federer wins it's 600 more, so total of 2420 gap reduction.
he will lose 600 points he has over federer on the olympic games. he scored 800 and federer only 200
Nadal will lose 450 points at queen's since he won't be competing.
And finaly wimbledon: if nadal happens not to show up, he will lose 2000 points and there's the possibilty that federer wins the tournament, collecting more points than last year extending those 2000 to some more.

So, i think your math had some little flaws.
    It doesn't seem that a big a gap now, right? : )

Unlike Federer who still blamed his mononucleosis from Aust Open 2 years ago!!
And what abt the backache etc etc?
