Pacheco defends Twitter post

Wed, 06 Jun 17:38:10 2012

Liverpool reserves forward Dani Pacheco's use of the word "negrito" in a Twitter message to team-mate Glen Johnson forced the young Spaniard to defend himself on the social networking site.

The 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano, used the term when wishing the England international luck as he headed to Poland for Euro 2012 on Wednesday.

He tweeted: "@glen_johnson good luck negrito!!!!"

Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches for using the same word towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra in a match at Anfield in October.

The Uruguay international unsuccessfully argued "negrito" was not a derogatory term in the Spanish language, despite its racial connotations in English.

When Pacheco received a couple of critical comments in response to his message he wrote: "I Allready (sic) explained in past what Negrito could mean. Good or bad depends how you say it. I always called @glen_johnson it in terms of love.

"Last tweet about it. @glen_johnson speaks Spanish and he knows what that mean when I say it to him. He is one of best mates there for me."

  4. Although in some places it is commonplace to use the word, it's all about the context in which it is used. Suarez didn't use it as an endearing term, he and Evra are not friends. In this case, other people might be offended by it, but let's ask Johnson how he feels. Bottom line is how the person being called negrito feels about it. Obviously we can't be expected to know what words are bad and what words are good in every culture around the world, so it's probably better to stick with words that are universal rather than clouding the issue then claiming ignorance

  17. Utter, utter nonsense. Our press cling to anything, no matter how small or trivial and turn it into the next race scandal because they're too lazy to come up with anything genuinely newsworthy. Pathetic really.

  18. While he's naive to say it and should have avoided it, He is Spanish, he is in Spain at the moment, it is a Spanish term for endearment under the right circumstances so what right exactly do the British press or any of us for that matter have to vilify him for it....I find it amusing when we'll allow certain races/Religions to come to Britain and burn poppies and see people in power shrug their shoulders and say freedom of speech....a Spanish born and currently based player tweets a good luck message to his mixed race English friend and no doubt the press and the "racial equality" groups will jump on it as though he's committed genocide.
