Kamsin Claims Derby Victory

Sun 06 Jul, 07:09 PM

Kamsin ran out a brave winner of the BMW 139th Deutsches Derby as British raider Top Lock could finish only third.

The Andrew Balding-trained runner was joined by Aidan O'Brien's King Of Rome in the 16-runner event at Hamburg but neither could top the pace-setting victor.

Sent to the front early in the 12-furlong Group One, Kamsin dug deep for Andrasch Starke turning into the straight with his stablemate Ostland and Top Lock finishing to particularly good effect.

However, the Peter Schiergen-trained winner found a little extra to hold off Ostland and present his handler with a third win and a one-two in the race.

"We actually had different tactics in mind as we wanted to turn it into a speed race, but he did it from the front really well," said Schiergen.

"I always thought he was very good and you have to forgive him for his last performance when he had a stomach ache.

"Today he was in great form and the rain didn't disturb him, in fact, he likes soft ground.

"The Group One race in Baden-Baden (Grosser Preis von Baden) could be one of his objectives, but first we want to get him home."

Top Lock's rider Martin Dwyer was satisfied with his mount's effort but felt the wet conditions in Germany had not helped his cause.

He said: "I'm very pleased with this run. The rain didn't really help as he probably needs a bit better ground, but it was a good performance."

King Of Rome eventually finished sixth while Walzertraum, the mount of Frankie Dettori, was only 15th.
