Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given is backing the Magpies to mount a promotion charge even though the turmoil on Tyneside shows few signs of abating.
The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international ended his association with the club after more than 11 years in January when he headed for Manchester City with things going from bad to worse on and off the pitch.
He perhaps could not have envisaged then just how bad things would get, and the Magpies now find themselves preparing for life in the Championship with no manager and an owner desperately trying to find a buyer.
But Given told the Evening Chronicle: "I know the players are determined to get back where they belong as soon as possible. That place is the Premier League. The other major factor is the fantastic support up there.
"They are going to have to add to the squad as well, but they will be in there fighting - and they have a good chance of returning straight away to the top flight."

i own the geordies
mike, you're a star man!
cameron
youre an absolute puff and as i said sailors
ameron you are jello
we have bought who we want and youre a nob
mike -
man city are this season's NUFC in the comedy stakes.
Even the Man from Del Monte says NO, and he keeps on saying NO!
Offering a dude a QUARTER OF A MILLION quid a week in wages, and he still refuses to sign for you . . . WOW!
At the last count, you have been turned down by over 50 players man!
I for one, will be amazed if you get within 30 points of whoever wins the league next season.
shay given saw the writing on the wall and left for a great club....
youre going down again newcastle
P.S John do you really pee through your brain? would get that checked out mate, that's just wrong
John B calm down mate, less white cider more sex,'Family Guy' and holidays,it's all just a bit of fun on here, some people like yourself take it way too personal. I've read your comments on the boxing site and quite frankly mate I've already forgotten more than you'll ever know. Try not to be so hostile all the time, you'll get on better with people on here and probably with people in life in general.Ask Cameron,Carl ,Tony etc it's called banter mate.
touche!
Jack i agree with your comments about Shay - he could've, and should've stayed 'til the end of the season. Furthermore, we were robbed blind; £6 million (from the world's richest club) was a disgrace, just about sums up ashley and his transfer dealings - i fully expected a minimum of £20 million for him!
As for your other comments; tsk, tsk Jack, the Toon were everybody's 2nd team back then (except your club for obvious reasons); still, now it is your turn to fly the region's Premiership flag - remember, in order to eclipse our proud achievements, you have to win the darn thing! THEN you can all crow!
Jack Torrance you know as much about football as you do about boxing judging by the rubbish you indulge in turning out on both forums.
You definitely come under the classification of "KNOW-ALL, KNOW F%£K-ALL. Take a few days off and try to relocate the object that you are under the misunderstanding is your brain. If you look real close you will become aware that other people actually use theirs to pee through and other actions. Perhaps these self same people are trying to gently let you know what you are doing wrong by calling you a @#$%-head. Ring any bells? I thought so, mum's the word though, eh?
p.s they'd have stood a better chance with you in goal still Shay, surrender monkey
john b enjoyed your comments, could have been sitting listening to me old dad. Apart from the "everyone was willing you to get over the line" comment ha ha I can think of a rather large ammount of supporters who laughed their c ocks off at Keegan unravelling on radio and dropping such a commanding lead.Honestly mate, apart from my dad (who was a Mag) everyone I knew thought it was hillarious.
Is he on drugs or something? I still say he should have stayed at SJP untill the end of the season, I can`t forgive him for jumping ship early.
Coz he's a bum puncher
Why do you dress in women's clothes?
Why do you support this rubbish little club?
jeeze guys... i think im missing quite a large factor here. Big sam left and said ' i want a break from the game'. he took it and has now saved blackburn. but at the time he was useless, which meant he got the sack. U dont keep a manager who cant win you game (Ramos is an example).
As for players not wanting to go to newcastle, that is right, for one reason: the league. I garantee you, if they were in the premier league, owen may have stayed (i dont think so but hey). If you look at last year, Gutierrez and Colococcni, both players who were im the spanish leage and both doing well, left for newcastle because they were a premier league club. no player playing in la liga, serie A or the premier league will join the championship because of a club... you stick to the level which ur at, till ur knocked down.
As for a manager, from wat iv heard, there's to manager ready for newcastle (technically 3), shearer, kinnear and Dowie (tho he was helping shearer (quite a lot)). the club itself as a whole need to realise that they are doing aweful and need to pull their corrupted fingersout of their arse's!!!
JOHN B, sounds like youv'e been in a coma for the last 30 years. Your comment 19, respect
john b...exactly when was the last match you ever watched?
