Lions 2009 - Lions forward Shaw banned

Eurosport - Mon, 06 Jul 15:44:00 2009

British and Irish Lions lock Simon Shaw was handed a two-week ban for dangerous play in the 28-9 final Test win over South Africa.

Simon Shaw - Lions 2003, 3rd Test - 0

Shaw, 35, received a yellow card after 37 minutes for striking scrum-half Fourie du Preez with his knee on Saturday and a hearing ruled the Englishman guilty.

Shaw will miss the start of the domestic season as his ban starts in August.

The Englishman is the second Lion to be suspended on the 10-match tour after Scot Nathan Hines received a one-week ban for a dangerous tackle during the 13-13 draw against the Emerging Springboks.

South Africa also had two players banned for incidents during the second Test, a match they won to claim the series 2-1.

Flanker Schalk Burger was handed an eight-week suspension for gouging wing Luke Fitzgerald, while Bakkies Botha was suspended for two weeks for a dangerous charge on prop Adam Jones later in the game.

  1. Thanks Don old boy, you are so quick!

  2. As usual, the NH talks a great game.

As usual, the SH team wins the series.

This is how it is, and how it will remain so for the forseeable future.

Credit to the Lions in the last game, they outplayed us in every single department. B-team or not, that was a woeful performance by the Boks. Anyone who knows rugby well enough could see there were guys in that team that just aren't good enough for international rugby. But thats the way it is in SA....

  4. Hey e=mc squared maybe you should go to your local ballet shop buy some tutu's go.... er no, I am starting to sound like some whinging Bok moron of a manager.
As for the C team. The whole world knows you whingers would use that one :). You've not lost at Ellis for 8 years and the look on your captains face was like a spanked schoolboy. Laugh, I nearly bought a round. It hurt and the world saw it.
Well done Shaw. They didn't know how to handle you. And Vickery. They thought you would fold. Funny how the beast popped out and gave away penalties when Vickery had 19 stone of hard @#$% (Shaw) up his arse. Tactical error in the first test. Needed a proper lock.

"Shaw is my hero! What he did was perfectly acceptable, because he was wearing a Lions jersey and therefore any dirty play is OK. Another thing, any decision going against the Lions is a bad one, and any against Boks is a good one"

    I couldn't agree more...

Whinge free rugby..thats a good one...not around these parts i'm afraid, they love wearing pink knickers too much look at the way they throw themselves around like they've been killed in the soccer when someone slaps them with a feather duster.

Maybe Rugby is too tough for them.Labbers, just wait til they play New Zealand and Tonga etc, these pommies gonna whine like a stuck pig, just wait and see!!!

  13. Shaw is my hero! What he did was perfectly acceptable, because he was wearing a Lions jersey and therefore any dirty play is OK. Another thing, any decision going against the Lions is a bad one, and any against Boks is a good one. Nevermind Bok supporters, remember this is a UK article, rest assured the SA ones are congratulating our boys on a well won series and wishing them all the best for the Tri Nations (the three best rugby playing nations on the planet playing whinge-free rugby).

From Tim, on Mon 6 Jul 1:28PM
  14. I think we all know who was the dirty side in this tournament. The problem is, they don't even realise it's wrong to try and deliberately injure an opponent's best players in order to improve their chances of winning. Maybe that is normal on your planet Lesley. Australia will wipe the floor with you in the Tri-Nats now the Lions have sussed out your limitations.

  15. Moaner Van Heerden (and there was a hard man) once said "Cowboys don't cry". So let's all shut up with the whinging. It's over ! Move on !

From BigRich, on Mon 6 Jul 12:23PM
  16. donald D you are so sad, the ref was blind too or the high tackles around the neck were missed as was the infringement in the maul which was identical to botha's but it was fine by you as it was your side playing dirty, as usual! Sheridan will be knighted for his devious play too I am sure. About that planet you live on????

From Lesley, on Mon 6 Jul 11:20AM
  17. As usual you Brits missed the fact that Rossouw had to be carted off the field and Fourie didnt appear back on the field. Shame, nice to be blind dumb and deaf. I love the world that you guys live in, I want to visit, which planet are you on.

From Lesley, on Mon 6 Jul 11:18AM
  18. Well at least the guy does not need an operation and will miss quite a few weeks due to it yes it was a little late but all done and dusted the ref was the best during the games that matterd, should have him from start then a good game would have been had by all,but the boks played to the ref simple as that, would the lions done the same i think so, moan all you like games are over now bring on the world cup

  20. The BOK b team eh? Well in a Nation where competitiveness is everything thats a great get out clause. l reckon they knew the third test would be a loss so fielded what was to be seen as a second string , afraid we would go out to hurt their key players , thus risking thier Tri-Nation prospects. This was a face saving exercise. We didn`t field our first team either mind.
