Australian MotoGP rider Casey Stoner will undergo a series of medical tests in the United States to try and determine the cause of a mystery illness that has left him feeling fatigued.
Stoner has been suffering from the problem for the last month and is now seeking medical help after feeling dizzy at the end of Sunday's US MotoGP in California.
"I didn't feel as bad at the end of the race as I have done in the last two, but I'm still not right," he said.
"I found it really difficult to keep my concentration over the last few laps and I was in a bit of a daze by the end."
The 23-year-old Stoner said he was also experiencing recurring problems with his left wrist, which he broke in 2003 but needed additional surgery last year because it never healed properly.
"My left arm was feeling really tired by the end because of the fact there are so many left-handers here and my left wrist still doesn't have the full range of movement after my operation in the winter," he said.
"Now we'll focus on trying to find out the root of the problem because racing in this condition is not much fun."
Stoner won the world championship on a Ducati in 2007 and was second to Valentino Rossi last year but is currently in third place this season after missing out on the podium at the US MotoGP.
"I can't be happy with fourth place, even though I know that we have performed some damage limitation in terms of the overall standings," he said. "It's a weekend to forget."

Could it be down to stress? Maybe. The pressure's certainly on him as an ex world champion who's not winning any more. Plus, he's Ducati's star so they'll be piling the pressure on him to get results too.
Add all that to the fact that the bike he's got is clearly a nightmare to ride and seems to take a lot more physical effort than the others in the field, it's no wonder he's running out of steam before the end of the race, and looks half dead afterwards.
Rossi is the king of mind games too don't forget, we've seen him crack biaggi and Gibernau in the last few years. Has he finally cracked Stoner too?
Casey's only sin, on this site anyway, is that he is Australian. Though to some that is a blessing. In the end even Barry Sheen moved to the Gold Coast and took Australian Citizanship. Says a lot! Stick to the second tier WSB you lot! That's were our second rate riders play. Oh, I forgot, we win there more often than the poms too!
Casey Stoner shoves beetroot up his bottom
Aahh I wondered when he was going to play the bad wrist card again. As I see it, he is pig sick because his bike is now only 5mph faster than everyone else and can't gain the half a second a lap down the main straight that he has been able to gain in the past. STOP MOANING
Yeah, motorcycle racers are a different bread. Super fit, Super focused and most importantly have attitudes and personalities. Something vacant from most F1 stars of late. You'll never see a motorcycle racer crying behind a bush! haha I remember Mika Hakkinen doing that though. You don't hear bike racers spitting at each other in the press either, saying things about the colors on a rivals car! Don't get me wrong. I love F1 and all forms of motorsport. But that guys comment was purely there to put bike racers down. It was a clown remarks! Stoner is probably suffering with a lack of fitness for another reason, changes to rules EGK mentioned, could be a cause. But most likely he's got an illness of some sort.
Whyd it come out twice though! haha
Correct on both accounts EGK. Keep it up buddy....
wguy123....Motorcyclist don't hide behind a bush to cry! Motorcycle racers ride with broken ankles, dislocated collar bones, broken ribs and worse....I don't know why you would make such a pointless comment as:
"Just watched an old documentary on Sky about Barrie Sheene,in the late seventies he had much the same symptoms, does this only effect motorcyclists?"
Also, Barry Sheene was a true hero of motorsport. He defied the odds to ride again. I can think of only Johnny Herbert in F1 that has gone through anything near similar. I have no doubt that car racing is difficult, but it does not compare to bike racing for physical exersion. Also, did you realise that when Valentino Rossi brakes from over 200mph to 60mph there is over 5g's on his arms? Motorcycle racers are a bread apart from any other person in motorsport...

Fitness plays an important roll in any form of physical sport. Stoner's lack of fitness lately has surely cost him chances to take victory. Although, Stoner like to lead away at the front rather than fight it out in close contension. Either way, Stoner has looked less like himself and a man clearly suffering from an illness. For anyone to say it's made up is a lack of understanding and clear cut bias. It may well be psychological, but as I am not a doctor and no one else on here is, how can we judge it properly? Last season when we had qualifying tyres, Stoner would also do the fewest laps of any rider and gain pole, or front row in the process. In free practice he would average just 20 laps and Qualifying just 12 laps. Now, with the new regulations and practice times, Stoner has to stay out longer and do more in less time. So, maybe it's just simply that he is not as fit as some of the other riders.
The main impression I got from the TV shots in America, was not one of illness but a man looking very frightened! Has the nerve gone, has he got the equivelant of a dog going gun shy?
glandular fever/mononucleuosis, sound a lot like the same symptons. would definiltely explaain tiredness, unfortunately it normallly takes up to a year to fully recover from.
I think too that Jason E says it all clearly. I couldn't agree more...
Like Jason E said. It is pretty clear Stoner has a real illness.
Glandular fever, a common disease, is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.
I wonder what the symptoms are?
he need help with them jug ears.
Oh dear some of the comments here are ludicrous. Nothing wrong with Stoner and he's just winging because he's being beaten? I highly doubt it. It all started in Catalunya where he put in the fastest lap and he was with Lorenzo and Rossi for about half the race then dramatically dropped back, his lap times just dropped, there was something clearly wrong. Then at Assen the same thing happened he was up with the leaders then he dropped back and he couldn't do anything and the same was evident at Laguna Seca. Although he's just winging because obviously him dropping 2 seconds a lap on his own earlier laps is just him being "no good". Remember at Catalunya they were equal on 106 points so he hardly pretended to have this mystery illness as he had no chance of the title. Some people may well be eating their words when he's back to full fitness, he clearly has the pace to keep up with Rossi, Lorenzo and now Pedrosa. Rossi has hardly broken Stoner, Stoner beat Rossi once for the title and Rossi beat Stoner for the title once. If anything they're equals at the moment. Although some Rossi fans on here seem to be highly pejorative.
Also, what's wrong with not liking losing? I'd rather have someone like that than somebody who just says "oh well off to the next race". That pain should hit anybody who loses or doesn't reach their goals, Stoner's goal is to win every race and rightly so. If you don't feel disappointed you shouldn't be in the sport. I praise him for his tenacity and grit, they're good traits to have. People just don't like being told how it is, if he has an illness he'll tell us, if there's something wrong with the bike he'll tell us, better than masking it or not saying anything at all.
Stoner problem is he cant stand losing, asfore the health issues its all in his head, you can see this when someone does something he dosnt like, the DUMMY gets spat out, like with the sete incident, come on casey you are a good rider but take defeat and learn from it,look how well jorge lorenzo takes it when hes been beaten,he is the next future chapion, after the DOCTOR has retired.
Whingeing ain't an illness casey, but i'll grant you its a PAIN!!!!!
just aske the Doctor(Rossi) he will make a prescription for ya, Dont be shy go ahead and dot it.
Poor little casey Stoner =)))))) After just 4 years in MotoGP he is fatigue??????? Give me a brake.......... he is just angry that he doesn't win anymore......Because ROSSi is the GREATEST MotoGP rider ever :D
