Newell nearing keeper swoop

Grimsby boss Mike Newell is closing in on his goalkeeping target.

Town need a keeper following the departures of Phil Barnes and Gary Montgomery.

Former Leeds midfielder Peter Sweeney became Newell's fourth summer signing on Friday and the Liverpudlian is close to adding the final pieces to his squad.

"We are making progress on the goalkeeping front but we won't rush into it," Newell told Grimsby's official website.

"It is an important position and one that we have to get right.

"We need around 16 to 18 professionals who can play first-team football and we are pretty much getting there now."
