Saunier Duval's David Millar got the better of Daniel Lloyd in a sprint finish to win the British National Road Race Championships.
Despite having completed the Tour de France just a week ago, the 30-year-old Scot managed to bridge a gap to an early 10-man attack, and though the peloton began to draw close, Millar attacked again along with Lloyd, prevailing in an uphill sprint finish.
"I can't believe I'm the national champion," he said after the race, which had been postponed due to heavy flooding in the north of England in June..
"This style of riding is different to what I'm used to so I took the race by the scruff of the neck. I would not have come across to this country for the race if I didn't want it.
"I wouldn't have come here to sit back and let the race get away from me. That's why I had to modify my style of racing. When the break came, I knew the race was over if I didn't jump across the gap. When I did attack, only Daniel and Russell Downing came with me."
Barloworld's Geraint Jones did not race and is still recovering from his efforts in the Tour de France.
