Owen calls for cool heads in opener

Wed 06 Aug, 01:15 PM

Stockport captain Gareth Owen has warned his players not to get over-awed with the occasion when they kick-off life in League One on Saturday. The Hatters defender helped guide his side to promotion from League Two last season and believes they have a good chance of excelling in League One.

He told the club's official website: "It is going to be a physical test in a higher division, a test of speed, pace and aggression, but if we match teams for that and play the way we know we can, I think we'll do alright.

"I believe we're capable of playing some of the best football in the lower leagues at times.

"It's important we keep our feet on the ground, but if we can get off to a good start then we and the fans will grow quickly in confidence."

  1. JG is a quality manager. Yeah you're right they might take a few games to get going this season and get used to the standard of League 1

  2. Pretty much agree with bunnies1 (cute name!) In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they took a little while to get their bearings. Two reasons, 1) it's a new division and SOME teams are stronger than the division they just came from. 2) JG won't buy players just to fill the squad numbers. If the quality players that he wants aren't available then he'll bide his time, using loan players, et@#$%il the quality he wants is available. He works all year round to improve the team, not just the close season or at transfer deadline time. We ain't seen the best of JG as a manager yet or his team.
    Come on County!

  3. With the new additions to the squad and the way they have played in the pre-season friendlies, I am optimistic for the season. Top half finish must be on the cards. Even if things don't go to plan early on, Jim Gannon has the ability to see any weakness and find the right type of player to put it right.
