Palace boss keen to tie down veteran

Wed 06 Aug, 05:45 PM

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock wants to hand veteran defender Matt Lawrence a new two-year contract, after impressing last term. The 34-year-old was one of Palace's most reliable performers last season, impressing at both right-back and centre-half, and Warnock is keen to reward him with fresh terms.

Lawrence's current deal runs out next summer and Warnock wants to tie him to the club until 2010.

"We're talking to Matt's agent and I would like to give him a two-year deal," Warnock told the South London Press.

"He's one of our consistent lads. I've been pleased with how he's done and it's only fair to reward him."

  1. Why the hell would you want to give a 34 year old a new two year contract when he already has a year left on his present one?

It's very unlikely that there will be a que at the door for his signature in a years time and when he's 35 years old.

Surely, the best thing to do is wait and see and assuming he has performed well in the forthcoming season, Palace could offer him another one year deal then, or not!
