Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott has confirmed young striker Steve Thompson will be sidelined for the first two months of the season. The 19-year-old damaged a hamstring during Saturday's pre-season friendly against Walsall.
The striker will be unable to train for six weeks and could require a further two weeks before returning to first team contention.
Sinnott said: "Steve's got an injury which means he's going to be away from training for about six weeks.
"That's frustrating for the lad himself and it's obviously frustrating for ourselves and the supporters.
"He had a hamstring pull very early on in pre-season, but this is a different injury and isn't connected with the previous one. But we'll deal with it and go on from here."
