Alonso set for £7.6m Honda switch

Eurosport - Wed, 06 Aug 15:44:00 2008

Fernando Alonso is set to sign a £7.6 million deal to race with Honda in 2009, according to The Guardian.

2008 Hungarian GP Renault Alonso - 0

The former double world champion suffered a disappointing year after moving to McLaren in 2007 while he has failed to reignite the glory days with a relatively uncompetitive Renault this season.

However Honda have not matched France-based Renault in 2008 and speculation still reigns that the 27-year-old driver will switch to Ferrari, perhaps in 2010 when Scuderia world champion Kimi Raikkonen retires.

That raises the possibility of a one-year deal between the Spaniard and Japanese-owned Honda.

The Guardian said veteran racer Rubens Barrichello would be the one to make way for Alonso in 2009.

"Fernando is a wonderful driver who would be a fantastic asset to any of the top teams, including this one," said Honda chief executive Nick Fry.

"The job [team principal] Ross [Brawn] and I have is to build a world championship-winning team."

  1. Alonso is the best driver ever and such a legend, I wish him every bit of success and would love to see him at Ferrari next year instead of the now apparantly dormant Kimi who doesnt want to bother himself with going to the podium - there is no vodka there!

  5. The Renault isn't the car that won the championship (twice) for Alonso, but it's a damn site better than the Honda! If he (Alonso) thinks he will just cruise for a year and wait for a Ferrari seat in 2010.....forget that, he probubly will!

Jessy m really should learn and research his history . He will find that the Spanish Empire was responsible for more plundering and human deaths than the English. The English were famous for their trade not territory philosophy, we the Spanish just plundered and left, thats why,for better or worse, the British went on to become the largest empire ever,

    ASK THE INDIANS...not territory philosophy..........LOL

  8. before I start I will say I am british before I get accused of being spainsh,
much to everyone's apparent dislike, I agree with Jessy M 100% Alonso is a world class, talented driver who does not deserve all the harsh critisism he gets and hamilton seems to be the whining little a$$hole who has to get everything his own way. It was obvious mclaren hampered alonso's performance because he wasnt achieving the results he did earlier in the season and the results he should have got.

The English were famous for their trade not territory philosophy, we the Spanish just plundered and left, thats why,for better or worse, the British went on to become the largest empire ever, and we Spanish went from being the wealthiest nation in the world to being a largely insignificant European nation. Alonso suffers for his chip on the shoulder, thank god we have dignified sportsmen like Nadal to make us proud.

  12. Jessy M, proper are being racist now, just like your countrymen, you know the ones, them who thought it was a 'joke' to black up their faces and wear T shirts saying Hamilton's family, or perhaps you are a football fan who likes to chant evil racist @#$% from the terraces whenever a British team plays in Spain? Alonso is shown typical of the Spanish, 'hot-headed and desperate'. As a world champion he behaved like a small spoilt child, why did he want favouritism, why didn't he prove how great he was on track? Afterall he was only up against a Rookie? As for Mclaren 'sabotaging' FA's car, utter bull mate, think about what Mclaren did to LH in china last year, it was their @#$% up that probably cost him the championship. I suggest you stick to watching that lovely sport of bull fighting, we'll stick with or ale and lager :D

  17. If this move happens,it would be a boost for Honda next year,as they'll have a driver who is able to exploit the most out the car,if Honda give Alonso and Button a good car next year(the jury is out on that one),then i think honda will do well, unlikely to score against the front runners but maybe be the fourth or fifth best running team!!Alonso is arrogant,no doubt, but he does get the job done, although others will say he good as long as he doesnt have a team mate who can challenge him;to be honest i think Hamiltons pace shocked Alonso last year, enough so to probably affect his focus on the job in hand.

  18. You people are beginning to bore me. Why does everything have to be turned into a Hamilton vs the world debate. Earlier in the season it was done about Lewis and Kimi both crashng into people, and now you're dragging up last year....AGAIN. I'm a fan of neither Hamilton or Alonso. Last year they were both as bad as each other, but Hamilton had the advantage of Dennis' favour over Alonso. Of course Honda would want Alonso, he's a good driver with a proven track record. He's also shown he is a great driver for the development of a car, which is exactly what Honda need.
I still can't see them getting rid of Rubens though, unless they pressure him into deciding to retire himself in a Ferrari/Schumacher esque way.

ps. jessy m you arse. I'm a Brit yet I'm not a Hamilton bummer and I seem to be able see things from more than one perspective. And just for the sake of accuracy ale and lager are two different things.

  19. Jessy M,

You Exude Such self control and composure! – Have you had a personal conversation with FA or are you making an assumptions? Is this YOUR PERCEPTION of how and why you think FA went to McLaren? Or were you personally privy to the detailed negotiations between the 2 parties??? - I SUSPECT YOUR COMMENTS ARE PURE FANTASY ON YOUR PART - HUMBLE APOLOGIES IF I'M WRONG!!!

As for the rest of your explosive outburst, you obviously have issues, and a more appropriate place would be a visit to a Therapist, where you could work through your Anger Management and Hostility issues in a safe environment! - Good Luck!

  20. I think Mr Renault deserved both its world titles and Mr Ferrari raced very well last year. Mr McClaren seems to have the upper hand this year though.
Isn't it nice of those driver people to collect the trophies on the car's behalf....
