Europa League - Dons out after record defeat

Eurosport - Thu, 06 Aug 21:44:00 2009

Aberdeen's Europa League humiliation was complete as Sigma Olomouc inflicted their biggest ever aggregate defeat in Europe with a 3-0 second-leg win.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 SPL Motherwell boss Mark McGhee - 0

Already 5-1 up from the first leg of the third qualifying round tie, the Czech side showed no mercy as they romped to victory at the Andruv Stadium.

All the goals came before half-time, with Tomas Janotka, a Marek Kascak penalty and Michal Hubnik - his second of the tie - all finding the net.

It could have been worse but for outstanding Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield, who also saved from the spot.

Otherwise, it was another inept defensive performance, compounding the misery of the travelling supporters following reports of skirmishes involving rival fans in Olomouc.

  2. aww! c'mon! i live in england (mores the pity), and the english premier league is nothing but over-hyped @#$%,full of over-paid people from players right down to the imbecilic and ludicrously jingoistic commentators, they were crowing non -stop last season about how they had so mant teams in the champions league and how it would be an all english final, bur i reckon they must have forgot about the team from the far superior spanish league. it was so satisfying to watch barcelona completely dismantle pathetic manchester united. lol!

  3. who are these fickle nobody's who slag Scottish Football? yes we're going through a bad period, but every dog has his day, i think it's good that this has happened, we need changes in our domestic game to compete these days in Europe, no longer should we use terms like "110%" and "ball winner" every footballer should give 110% without saying, and every footballer should be able to win the ball, the operative word here is "footballer" i dont want to pay to watch a "110% ball winner" i want to watch football.

  4. Not an Aberdeen supporter (actually a rugby supporter) BUT find in crazy that the team in the supposed Oil capital of the North and also with supposedly a Millionaire as Chairman they cannot sign players because they cant compete with wages on offer in the 3rd tier of fitba in England.

  6. #16 I am Dons fan and I think you are being generous. The Old Firm would be lucky to survive in the EPL but might do it with the always sold out games and what would be the 4th or 5th highest attendances and gauranteed TV revenue stream. They would however quickly climb to the top tier because of that and that a great many exiled Scots like myself would follow one or the other down here. THEN Scots football would be competitive again. Why would the chairman/owner of any Scottish team spend money - for 3rd? a cup run? and I wouldn't have to get the slagging that awaits me.

But it will never happen who would vote the old firm in? top 4 would add to their competition in a few years the others would have more chance of going down and staying down.

Scottish football IS in a sorry state and Fergie's return wouldn't save us.

  7. We may have been well thumped by the czechs however this may force the board into giving the manager some money so it could turnout to be a good thing in the longterm scheme of things. As for the abuse the team is getting on this msg board this is more than likely old firm fans gloating at our demise however given the wages that the bigot brothers can pay for the better players is anyone surprised at the standard of player that Aberdeen and the like can attract.Remember Dons fans we can look forward to our tue and wed nights watching these tarts being humped almost every game by some REAL big teams.

  8. @ Rico

I am from Scotland and I like the SPL, I support Kilmarnock so have no real bias towards either of the old firm. Whilst I agree that initially Rangers and Celtic would be mid-table and once the TV money etc rolls in then they would be right up challenging the big boys.
All that is missing from Scottish football is a little bit of money. Take Gretna for example, they get a wealthy buyer and in a few seasons progress from the Third Division to the SPL and taking a trip to Hampden for the Scottish Cup Final in the process. Yes they did go bust and yes the competition in Scotland isnt great. But it does show that a little bit of money can completely change a team.
I think that if the Old Firm did leave the SPL to go to the EPL Scottish football would initially suffer. But with the fans great support it would climb back up to a similar position it is now. Wales and Ireland, yes have absolutely terrible leagues but the Irish like the Scottish game, and the Welsh have no option but the English. The point I'm trying to make is that without the Old Firm, teams like Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United will be able to regularly get into the european spots allocated to Scotland. Which if we did lose the OF would drop to maybe 3. One Champions League qualifying stage, and two Europa League spots. From that those teams would gain solid money.
I also think that the SPL would still get a TV deal. It would not match the one we have or have had but it would still create the income needed for these teams to survive.
The SPL's players are not top quality but I would say of the standard of the Championshipa down. One Stevie Naismith of Rangers had a trial with Arsenal before he eventually signed for Rangers from Kilmarnock. Wigan new boy James McCarthy was scouted by both Chelsea and Liverpool whilst he was playing in Scottish Division 1.
The SPL would survive but may not be as good as it is just now but it would certainly have the fans and financial suppo

  9. Rico, superb. Spot on, u r right about where things fit. I'd say WHY??!! Not many years ago we were a team in the third tier of the English league. We escaped by a mere whisker and avoided becoming Leeds (or worse Newcastle). We're playing your mates Celtic this weekend in a doomed attempt to gel as a group of overpaid millionaires. At least we're not Newcastle, don't think our owner's gonna be in the stands swiggin broon = Chav owner, chav results. Come on Aberdeen get some confidence. Blue Moon.

  12. Stop rating down all the anti-SPL comments, the best sides from the SPL (Celtic and Rangers would initially fit in the 3rd tier of the EPL:

Tier 1: ("The Big Four")- Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal
2: ("The Best of the Rest")- Everton, Man City, Aston Villa, Tottenham
3: (Midtable)- Fulham, Sunderland, Wigan, West Ham (RANGERS, CELTIC)
4: (The relegation candidates)- everyone else

Eventually their high and passionate support may get one of them into the UCL.

The point however is that minus the Old Firm, the best the SPL offers is teams like Aberdeen. No disrespect, they are a good club with good tradition but are not world beaters and would either be epl relegation fodder or Fizzy Pop Championship play off hopefuls at best. If the old firm ledt, scottish football would be relegated to the levels of welsh and irish leagues, no tv interest, no teams in the UCL, nobody outside the country would give two haggises about it.

Good players, well managed, make good teams. Look at the Celtic and Rangers management and playing staff. A couple of examples- Gordon Strachan, good manager of my hometown saints but that is about as high as he could realistically go un epl, pedro mendes one of rangers better players yet surplus to requirements at spurs, none of the big teams in england buy any players from spl and if even average/poor teams such as wolves show an interest, players will even leave rangers and celtic to join, nuff said

Now instead of marking me down SPL fans, argue that im wrong- does this result not demonstrate what most fans have known for ages: only two teams are any good in the SPL and even they would struggle to hold their own against the top 8 in the EPL.

    Cheers
