Super 14 - Hawke's Bay withdraw Super bid

Eurosport - Thu, 06 Aug 06:59:00 2009

Hawke's Bay have pulled out of the running to host the new team in the expanded Super 15, according to the New Zealand Press Association.

Sione Lauaki of New Zealand's Waikato Chiefs is tackled by Cobus Grobbelaar (R) of South Africa's Lions during their Super 14 - 0

Hawke's Bay were one of two New Zealand franchises that had expressed an interest in bidding but have withdrawn, leaving Taranaki as the country's only possible bid.

Australia's New South Wales Country also pulled out of the race this week, but there are at least six other interested franchises in Australia, plus one from South Africa.

The Super rugby competition is being expanded and reorganised in 2011 along a conference system based in each of the three SANZAR (South Africa New Zealand Australia Rugby) partners.

Bids will be due by the end of September with a final decision from SANZAR expected in late October.

  1. So they should...
Hawkes Bay are a strong proud national union, not a Super Union.

Stop expanding the game and concentrate on improving the current format and sharing the money between ALL the Super Unions leading to a closer Super 14.
