Championship - Ipswich charging more than Man Utd

Eurosport - Fri, 06 Aug 11:58:00 2010

Championship strugglers Ipswich are charging more than Liverpool or Manchester United for their top-priced season tickets.

- 0

Season tickets for Portman Road for the 2010-11 season cost up to £1,001 - despite the fact that Roy Keane's side struggled to 15th place in the Championship last season, winning just eight of their 23 home league fixtures.

By contrast Manchester United charge £931 for their most expensive seats, while Liverpool demand £785, according to the survey in Four Four Two magazine.

Only the big three London clubs charge more for their prime season tickets, with Spurs demanding up to £1,210, Chelsea £1,695 and Arsenal a whopping £1,825 for the best seats in the house.

All the sides offer cheaper season ticket options, however, and an Ipswich spokesman told the magazine that those paying out over a grand to watch the Tractor Boys do at least get "the best view, plus a bit more legroom".

At the other end of the spectrum, Wigan's top-priced season ticket goes for just £295 - the cheapest of any club in the top three divisions of English football.

  1. Catherine,

Are you saying that the ordinance survey map dated pre 1945 is wrong? The one that says the North Road Stadium (carrying the grid reference which is now Northumberland Rd) is located in Clayton? Is that what you're saying Catherine? Maybe an ordinance survey bod took exception to what you were saying? Or maybe, just maybe, people read you're comments, read mine (which contained evidence and it's sources) and figured it's you who don't know what you are talking about and gave you the old "thumbs down".

Is that what you're saying Catherine? Or is it just that when things don't go your way you blame somebody else: 4th official, referee, the kit, Yahoo. Wonder where you learn't that "tactic" from. Oh yeah, just remembered, you're a United fan.

What was that you said "looks like someone can't handle the truth".

Truest thing you've said on here.

  5. Catherine,

"the only people even slightly bothered about the local geography and governmental boundaries are City fans"

Actually not true. My original point was made in reference to United fans complaining about other fans constant references to the geography of United fans. I was merely highlighting the reasons why these fans did this. Most other non-manc football fans I know are very cynical about United because of their geographical schizophrenia. Remember the furore over MK Dons? English football fans have traditionally been brought up to support the team from their own town (there are always exceptions of course), and where there are (as is often the case) two town teams this would encourage an inner city rivalry. United bucked the trend.

Also please don't kid yourself with the Town Parish argument. The town Parish is synonymous with Greater Manchester today. The Borough of Manchester was pretty well established by 1904, Old Trafford was built in 1910. Stretford was NOT in the borough of Manchester and therefore was NOT part of the City of Manchester.

The facts are United moved to Stretford to take advantage of the new ship canal, and it's associated business links. It was a business deal, pure and simple. Moving out of the City's boundaries probably suited the owners who didn't want to have local councillors medling in their business. Man City of course embrace such medling (although directors refer to it as co-operation).

  6. Bertalan, I understand where you are coming from, because footballers are overpaid and most of them are what you say they are. But, Rugby League isn't what you need to watch. Now, RUGBY UNION is a man's game.

  7. Kevin they are over paid the teams are all in debt because they are paying out more than they bring in football is not generating what it pays out.

  8. Catherine,

I guess you didn't check the link I told you about. If you did could I ask you to follow your own instructions and read again. Unfortunately I can't paste the link so I'll try and explain as best I can:

The North Road stadium is described as follows:

"North Road was a football stadium and cricket field in Newton Heath, Manchester, England. It was the first home of Manchester United Football Club – then known as Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Football Club – from its foundation in 1878 until 1893, when the club moved to a new ground at Bank Street, Clayton".

Now you would be forgiven for thinking the reference to Newton Heath has made your point. Unfortunately boundary changes combined with the desire to describe things in reference to their more recent boundary leads to people assuming the ground was always located in Newton Heath. To get the true picture you need to click on the file picture, which was from pre 1945, before boundary changes were made.

The file picture, from an ordanance survey map has the following description:

"English: A section of a pre-1945 Ordnance Survey map centred on the location of North Road stadium, Clayton, Greater Manchester"

This section of map and it's description has the co-ordinates: 53°30′13″N 2°11′56″W. Punch those co-ordinates into Google maps and you will indeed get the modern day Northampton Road. In other words I am NOT talking about the North Road that currently resides in Clayton. AFAIK there never was any form of stadium located near that North road, just a school.

You can argue the point all you want, I don't think ordinance survey maps are ever wrong (or indeed it would be very very rare), and I know in this instance it is correct. The reason the team was called Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Football Club was because the players all worked for the railway depot whi

  14. Once again the new football season is upon us and the morons are already surfacing to voice the same old boring....... boring issues over and over again. The recent world cup fiasco perhaps is a good indication of the direction football is going......hopefully down the pan! Overpaid, overvalued, role models my proverbial bottom (i'm being polite, i could have said my @#$% or even my arse but i refrained from doing so) skivers, divers, theatrical amateurs, whining, moaning, whinging bunch of so called proffessionals! As for Walkers Crisps, Hansen & the rest of the BBC pundits, we'll have heard it all before so, so many times. No doubt they are busy rehearsing the 'strength and depth' of their vocabulary over a packet or two for yet another ...yawn.....still yawning season ahead. I suppose there's one good thing to come out of it Hansen won't have any reason to go shopping at 'Morereasons' any more. Not that he did anyway, he's a Tesco man so I hear! Then again you can't always believe what Lee Dixon says! The animal kindom has probably got it just about right by hibernating in the winter thereby missing out on all that entertainment....yawn...yawn.....yawn! Perhaps they dream of that infamous image of Fergie ranting and raving, not that he does really it's all hype. Its the act....or in him that makes him do it. Fergie was last spotted in House of Frase negotiating a new tea set deal. Two for the price of three! Thank you!

  16. jamesl you are a typical utd supporter. Every trophy you have ever won recently has been down to blatant cheating (regular dodgy last minute penalties at old trafford) bullying of referees (Very famous pics of roy keane screaming in the face of a ref) Fergie whinging about perfectly fair decisions and coming up with pathetic excuses for losing (wasnt it the grey kit when they got destroyed by Southampton a few years back). Man utd make me ashamed to be english because they are a disgrace to football and I hope they go bankrupt. Oh and for the record, Ive worked at Salford Quays for the last 10 years and deal with Utds scummy self righteous supporters on a regular basis. Utd are finished and the rest of english is delighted. GET OVER IT!!!

Newcastle one of the smallest cities in europe Less than 200,000 people live up here and have full house every home game approx 55,000 apart from slight hiccup last season. We cant extend ground as there are listed buildings one side and Leazes public park other side, so 60 - 70,000 would be a good average, how many clubs can boast that type of support from one of the most poorest parts of europe. We dont bother with Christianity up here football is our religion and its a lot easier to get into heaven then it is to get a season ticket for the toon. If Jesus came back tomorrow he would have a toon shirt on and 20 embassy regal in his pocket but he still wouldnt get in to see the toon at home.
