Tuilagi, 21, who plays his club rugby for English side Leeds, was taken to hospital, but has now been told he will not recover in time to play a part in his country's campaign.

Anitele'a will be going home," said Samoa head coach Michael Jones (pictured), who has already lost prop Donald Kerslake to broken ribs and lock Filipo Levi to an eye injury.

"We have to get a replacement; he might be out for three or four weeks. We've got someone in mind but we have to verify their health and fitness. He's a great young talent, we're very sad."

Samoa begin their World Cup against Pool A rivals South Africa on Saturday.
