MANCHESTER (AFP) - British boxer Amir Khan lost his unbeaten record in a shock first round knockout defeat as Breidis Prescott claimed the WBO Intercontinental lightweight title here on Saturday.
The little-known Colombian sent Khan to the canvas before following up and knocking out the Englishman to win the World Boxing Organisation belt at the MEN Arena.
Prescott needed just 54 seconds to knock out Khan, who got up after one knockdown only to be sent to the canvas moments later.
Khan, 21, suffered his first defeat in his 19th professional fight and now looks a long way off the top lightweights like Nate Campbell, the American who defends three versions of the world title against the Dominican Republic's Joan Guzman on September 13.
Khan's leaky defence was again exposed in his first fight under new trainer Jorge Rubio.
Prescott first winded Khan with a shuddering body shot and when the Lancashire boxer's hands dropped, the Colombian unleashed a powerful left to the temple.
It was a perfect shot and it left Khan crumpled in a heap on the canvas.
Khan got to his feet but he was on wobbly legs and after being allowed to continue after a count of eight, Prescott launched into Khan with another right-left assault to leave him on the canvas again.
This time, Khan was counted out.
Khan, who was floored for the third time in the paid ranks by fellow Englishman Michael Gomez in June, is now left with a rebuilding job to rescue his career from unfulfilled promise.
Prescott, 25, had stopped 17 opponents in an unbeaten 19-fight career before climbing into the ring to face Khan but little was known of the Colombian.
Prescott, who had a slight height advantage, had bragged he would burst Khan's bubble and stop him in the fourth round -- but he did sooner than he or anyone else had imagined.

item 3-bullseye.you laid it right on target.the whole world thought Frazier had a jaw like that of a crocodile before he was beaten silly by foreman who was beaten silly by Alli.and remEMber ken norton broke alli's jaw and people said his jaw was made of a wet paper bag.EVEN IF 'THE GREATEST' ALLI HAD RUSHED INTO A FIGHT THE WAY KHAN RUSHED INTO THE PRESCOTT FIGHT,HE WOULD HAVE BEEN BEATEN.BUT LETS NOT TAKE IT AWAY FROM PRESCOTT,HE IS GOING TO DO VERY WELL IN BOXING.MY ADVICE FOR KHAN;they say the best form of defence is attack but i will say khan should ignore that and take the opposite 'his best form of attack is defence'.or did he think mayweather would have beaten hatton toe to toe, chin for chin.
he was pumped up by the media
and put down by a boxer
he wont recover from the shock of it.
he may as well just try and make a living from getting punched
because he was found out early
ANYONE CAN GET CAUGHT BY A SOLID PUNCH, REMEMBER LENNOX V MCALL. HE WHO RETIRED UNDEAFETED CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. THE LAD DOESNT GENERALLY NEED AN IRON JAW AS HIS ATTACK IS SO GOOD. THIS FIGHT WAS DESTINED TO GO TO WHOEVER CAUGHT EACH OTHER FIRST SOLIDLY. WHAT IT DOES PROVE IS HE NEEDS SEIOUS ATTENTION ON HIS DEFENCE BUT WE KNEW THAT ANYWAY.
We found out today how good a fighter Khan is. He is a good domestic fighter who may make some headway in Europe but not beyond that. The way Khan lost today suggests he does not have the chin to reach the top. Unless he can learn to improve his defence drastically, he will not be a world class operator. His manager needs to take some of the blame for the way Khan lost. He is only 21 years old and his recent outings prior to this fight demonstrated his defence needed serious tightening. Then what lunatic put him infront of such a dravasting puncher needs his head examined. Rubio might be a great amateur coach but the generally Cubans trainers have never achieved anything in the professional ranks. In summary, Khan is a good domestic fighter but he will NEVER be a world beater and is not in the same league as his boyhood hero, Naseem Hamed. Now there was a world class fighter who could punch and was defensively awkard to hit. But Naseem never had a GLASS JAW like Amir.
