Premier League - Fabregas: City move 'suicidal'

Eurosport - Sat, 06 Sep 14:43:00 2008

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas feels it would be 'suicidal' for his career if he were to sign for Premier League moneybags Manchester City.

FOOTBALL Cesc Fabregas - 0

Backed by the financial muscle of Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG), new City owner Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim recently revealed his ambition to add a number of world-class players to the squad in January.

Fabregas and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres are reportedly among the list of targets, while Al-Fahim went as far as to hint at a £135 million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gunners star Fabregas, though, has no intention of leaving the Emirates Stadium should City bid for services in the next transfer window as he feels a move to Eastlands would prove detrimental to his footballing career.

The Spain international said in the Telegraph: "It would be suicidal for my career at my 21 years of age to move to City. It would make no sense."

  3. Let's be realistic. City are not 'the world's richest club'! They are worth £150m which is what the arabs paid. But, remember, any money the sheik puts in will be a loan. He still has to follow the law as defined in The Companies Act 1985. Just look at Chelsea. As a company they are almost bankrupt. Abramovitches input is not generated by trading so has to be treated as a loan rather than an asset. If their insolvency continues they could, as a company, be forcibly wound uop for breaking company law that says that companies must operate at a profit or explain to Companies House why they are trading irresponsible. If Roman leaves Chelsea his money goes with him and Chelsea are finished. Players values cannot be taken into account on a balance sheet but their wages are. The same will happen at City. Yes it might seem attractive to 'buy' the Premiership Title but we all know that's not the proper way to do it. It just causes inflated transfer fees and destroys youth policy. City have just won the Youth Cup. Lets see how many of those players break into the first team. All I can say is 'Be careful City. You may have made a monumental mistake.' City fans don't celebrate too soon and remember City's track record, about 20 managers in the last 25 years. They can't all have been bad. There's something deep-rootedly wrong there, and has been for years, which I fear that the injection of money, no matter how much, cannot put right.

  4. It takes more than money and "Big Names" to make a good team, Its clear that no research has gone into the players city are trying to get. Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim has obviously just looked at the top players in the premiership and decided that, if they play well at their respected clubs now they will perform well together at at City we all know that wont be the case.
I feel for City this money is an amazing opportunity but i cringe at the thought of it being wasted.
Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SPEND WISELY FOR THE REPUTATION OF MAN CITY!

  5. ASXTC,United don't have a pot of gold with Glaziers in charge. Just the club that they hope will bring pots of gold through uniteds name around the world!!! 6. Its all well and good for these large corporations buying into the premier league to lift their profile, but it is the fans of these clubs that will pay the cost when they look for a return on their investment. I think it is high time the premier league put in place a system to safe guard the future of English football. The day will come when one of these super deals collapses leaving a large club in financial ruin.

  7. Fab,city have the best youth policy in the country, why not join them for this ride of the future and start playing with some of the best players we will have soon rather than eating humble pie later when your not going anywhere in your life at Arsenal!? Gunner's fans, read Piers Morgan column on back of sport pages in the mail on sunday, you have only the board to blame for the demise your going to suffer!!??

you think its just city who have bought the premier league??

hate to tell u but money has always played a gigantic role in football... especially in the last 10 years..
if anything... this city takeover has made the top 4 into a top 5!! therego making the EPL more interesting in one regard!!
but on the other hand.. its just added moreso to the boredom of the league... which is looking at the constant relogation of the clubs who were just promoted, but city are by no means solely responsable

  10. there are players out there that want to play for clubs for playing reasons, but most of them, like the mercenaries of chelsea, go for more money. im not a gunner, but its nice to hear fabregas has got his head screwed on. berbatov turned down more money to play for his dream.

From ripped of, on Sun 7 Sep 10:35AM
  11. @ vicky.gresham- CRons dream to play for Real was fuelled by money not for footballing reasons or pride.
@ jamie.d- It's the group that have claimed they can buy any player. They are the ones than now own City and have shown that they have vast sums to spend. How on earth is this different than the Top4's financial positions? They are only top 4 because they have more financial resources th the rest of the league. Chelsea wouldn't be top4 without RA's money. United have the Glazier family. Liverpool have Hicks and co.
@Samir- Your quick to spot that the situation of City is like that of Chelsea.

  14. Honestly in this new millenium - money talks, every other M$^%Fu328ing Bu^%@$it walks. For Cesc to say what was reported, its a distraction. Just like Robhino, Chelsea is the ONLY club I wanna join, Real Madrid is the best club in the world etc. End of the day, the weekly wages proved too much gor them to reject City. City to buy the EPL!

Anyone who says you cant buy success is wrong, ...this fella is going to do just that!

  17. Cesc will never play for another English club he will more then lightly got to Real or Barca certainly not Man City. I used to like them but I am a little sad that they think they can splash the cash and win everything - silverware is won as a team not through a cheque book it dosn't matter how much money you have you cant buy success it has too be made.

  18. Lets see if he is saying this a couple of years from now. All you who are criticizing city, there isnt one of you who wouldnt like the money that we now have and the potential. As a city fan i dont believe that we will do that well this season, but am certain that within a couple of years we will be challenging and the top players will want to come to us.
