Premier League - Shearer put off Toon job

Eurosport - Sat, 06 Sep 10:58:00 2008

Newcastle fans' favourite Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the running to replace Kevin Keegan and admitted he could never be manager at St James' Park under the current regime

FOOTBALL - Alan Shearer, Newcastle legend, at St James' Park - 0

Shearer, 38, insisted the supporters were entitled to be angry following Keegan's resignation as the Magpies' manager.

The former England boss left in protest at his lack of involvement in the buying and selling of players.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley had given former Leeds manager Dennis Wise - appointed executive director (football) - and Tony Jimenez, the club's vice president, control of the club's transfer policy.

Recruiting Shearer as manager would go some way to appeasing the Toon Army, who have protested outside St James' Park since rumours started circulating that Keegan had left the club earlier in the week.

But the former England striker, who scored 206 goals in 404 appearances during his 10-year spell on Tyneside, has said that he would not be able to work under the current structure at the club.

"I would like to be a manager at some stage in my career, but that means controlling the players that go in and the players that go out," he told BBC's Football Focus.

"I don't think I would be comfortable working within a structure with a director of football who was picking and choosing the players for me."

Everton manager David Moyes and former Juventus coach Didier Deschamps have been installed as the bookmakers' favourites for the job, but Shearer said he was unsure about who will take the job.

"I don't think there will be a shortage of people who want the job, but your guess is as good as mine," he said.

"I know the fans are very unhappy at the moment. They have voiced their opinions and they are more than entitled to do that because without the fans there is no Newcastle United.

"They are angry, hurt, and disappointed and everyone feels for them, me included because we all want the same thing - success at Newcastle United because we are all supporters.

"It's going to be a big task for them because the fans are very angry. There are going to be a million names thrown around and they are going to have to make a decision quickly, before the next game."

  2. jackel- blackburn bought the title from united, chelsea bought the title and city are going to try and buy the title, but united always get it back. i feel sorry for the magpies as kev is the best manager you will ever have, the best thing for newcastle is to get rid of the RAT and Ashley, cos if you dont you will be challenging stockport county in division two.

  4. Well as a football fan I can find no humor in the situation Newcastle fans find themselves in.
And neither I think do many true fans of Football whatever club we support, we started off as Footie fans do moaning about the fact our manager has not signed a soul (Arsenal fans)
One of our mates was a bit late in to the club and broke the news than Keegan had gone, somthing to do with other people buying him players he did not want Not so Wise has his sticky paws all over that!!
we spoke about the situation for quite a while and thanked god our board has decided they did not want one large investor.
Manchester United bought by one family but with a very large loan quite a few fans were so against this they left the club and formed their own form of Man U in the uni bond leagues I believe,
While i cannot see anyone telling Sir Alex who he will buy and sell the Debt is a worry although we must be fair and say that Sir Alex always seems to get the funds he wants
Liverpool bought also with debt by 2 Americans who it seems have fallen out They now it seems cant raise another cent and this has hampered the buying of players and the plans for building a new stadium
So Liverpool I would think HAVE to be in the top four of the prem every year to ensure a passage to the champions league as they are in humongous Debt without having built a new stadium which will cost upwards of 50 million I suspect.
Chelsea are bankrolled by their chairman Abramovich But god alone can help them if he gets fed up and was to pull the plug they do not have the capacity in their stadium to bring in the players wages Stamford bridge holds around 42,000 i believe
Arsenal have a large stadium debt they have not been helped by the property prices droping as it has knocked a few bob off the luxury appartments they have built on the site that was once Highbury, As a fan I do think they need now to have splashed out a bit as we have a new kid on the block with massive spending power

  8. ....you are welcome Papadragon, you make fair observations, course any semblance of intelligence will be perpetrate great torrents of abuse from Trogan's of the terraces, fresh from the heat of battle, having spent their dole money on another stout defence of their manhood, not to mention topping up Joey Bartons "Incapacity Benefit" whilst he is on vaction...being able to curse like a docker evelvates you to the higher echelon of speculative thinking, the mere mention of Alan Shearer for manager will turn the tide, kinda Captain of the Titanic, and perhaps if he could make Hansen a decent offer he could return to orgnise the drinks for Ashley at the back, he would ensure at least that the Toon will be where they want to be most...above Sunderland lol
... course wit itself will make someone as popular as a foreskin in a synogogue amongst the knuckle draggers who tell us they have a right to abuse people in any manner they see fit, or more accurately the only way they know how to communicate...on the basis that they have blown their dole money, or melted their Granny down for glue, to raise enough dough to replenish Joey and his fellow heroes to fiscal contentment .....the team of course keep the "best supporteres in the world" in requisite misery to preserve drunkedness and wife beating at the usual high levels locally...if you ever have the misfortune to be trapped in a pub with any of these "fans"..almost to a man they will tell you, they too were on the road to soccer stardom till stricken with a knee injury....lol...aye...talking to them almost makes me feel inadequate, sadly never been a beginning to my talents...

  12. Alan Shearer couldn't get a job stacking shelves in Tescos when he left school so they put him on the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) which was the governments way of reducing the statistics for the unemployed or should that be unemployable !
He got taken on by Southampton as I remember because he came for free !
Then they found out he could head and kick a ball harder than anyone else around so they stuck him up front and said
"Don't think about playing football just shoot on sight"
The rest, as they say, is history but if you ever hear him talk and I saw him on TV during the Euro 2007 he obviously hasn't got a pot of glue(clue)
"ErUm ErUm I agree with Lee Sharpe" was about all he really had to say for his 5000 or was it 10000 quid appearance fee
The idea that he would ever make a "coach" or a "manager" is about as daft as putting Keegan back in charge and perhaps the cleverest thing he ever did was to realise this himself which is why he always ducks the issue
What Newcastle and the Loony Toon Army need is a real "manager"
Gascoigne and Ashley "a marriage made in heaven"

  15. Papadragon you must be really clever. You have a qualification!? Nobody in Newcastle has ever seen one of those; and certainly no footballer............ Why would a Pseudo intelligent person write such tripe on a message board . From a Newcastle fan with MORE THAN ONE QUALIFICATION.

  16. Papadragon and don.mackillop, what a pair of lowlife bigots you both are!! Did you forget the subject? Posting sweeping, dumb statements about people from the north east on what is supposed to be a FOOTBALL FORUM, is retarded to say the least. (And no,i'm NOT a Geordie)

    From stevjohn3715, on Sat 6 Sep 6:06PM
  17. don.mackillop
    Thanks for your support
I played football and I can tell you that most of the rest didn't have two O levels to rub together and they swore like troopers
I called it "a shortage of vocabulary" but they didn't know what vocabulary meant
All they ever talked about was beer sex betting and cars
Paul Gascoigne was their role model and players like Joey Barton is their reward
Needless to say I didn't make many friends and certainly wouldn't entertain any of them in my home
It seems that most of the supporters these days are pretty much the same
Life after football was usually a long dole queue which is probably where most of these supporters come from too
I have noticed a conspicuous lack of any kind of knowledge of the game especially from the Newcastle area
I was grateful for the college release which got me a qualification so I was able to have a life after football which was much more fulfilling
This comment should get a few obscene replies That's if they can understand some of the big words
