Rio Ferdinand will miss the opening match of England's World Cup qualifying campaign with a neck injury.

FOOTBALL 2008 - Rio Ferdinand during England training - 0

England manager Fabio Capello confirmed the Manchester United defender was unavailable for the game against Andorra but he is expected to be fit for Wednesday's trip to Croatia.

The match in Barcelona is Capello's first competitive match since he took over from Steve McClaren following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Capello insisted "the door is still open" for Newcastle striker Michael Owen despite his omission from England's squad for their first two World Cup qualifying matches.

There have doubts cast over the international future of Owen after he was not included in the party for the forthcoming fixtures against Andorra and Croatia.

But head coach Capello has addressed concerns that the 28-year-old is no longer part of his plans and explained that fitness was the major factor behind the decision.

"I considered things and I decided he [Owen] is not fit physically," Capello explained.

"The match against the Czech Republic you could see that Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney were not fit and they played on 60 and 70 minutes.

"So it is for this reason I have not included Michael Owen but the door is still open for him to return."

Capello also said that he has seen his squad develop since he has taken over from Steve McClaren earlier this year even though England's performances have not been convincing.

"I have seen a lot of improvement because the players understand what I want and at this moment I am confident in the players in the team for the next two games," Capello added.

"When we played against the Czech Republic the players were not completely fit but now they are better.

"This is only the first game and we have just start on the road for South Africa. We have many more games to play."

  1. Sir Alix can't handle a natanal team. And the great managers win The World Cup. I think Capello is the best manager for england now. the reason why the EPL is so good is becouse of the influcks of over seas players. English players don't enjoy football. to them it a living, and not fun.

  2. U mean Graham Taylor. Yes I agree with most comments, especially about the tabloids that constantly expect perfection from these high paid professionals. I don't disagree totally with them but there is too much negativity surrounding the England football team period. I accept that we have'nt done well overall in the last 40 odd years, but we need a POSITIVE MENTALITY to break this trend. In my last comment on this thread I mentioned building the team and setting up a default formation which when tinkering around with other stupid ones we can resort to. This has to be set out in every training session that Capello has because of club and time commitments.
At this crucial time before the World cup qualifying the England team need to get off to a good start no matter how ugly the performance is. Thats it. We need to grind opponents down and make them scared again.

  3. England managers in the last years:

Sir Bobby Robson: Great manager. But failed to qualify for Euro 84 and messed up Euro 88. Still his World Cup campaigns were excellent.

Gordon Taylor: Should never have got the job against Cloughie. WE all know the results: Went to Euro 92 without a right back even if Paul Parker was available and failed to qualify for USA.

Terry Venables: Good manager, but really, all he did was two good games in the home Euro; against the Netherlands and against Germany.

Glenn Hoddle: Had promise but got job ridiculously early. And he was more intent on making a name withhis world-cup memoirs than actually managing the team . . . oh, and he left Gazza at home for the World Cup.

Kevin Keegan: Pathetic is being kind.

Sven Goran Eriksson: Took a team that had no hope of qualifying for the World Cup and transformed them into potential winners. Got the best results of all time except a Cup. Statistics back this. However, it has to be agreed that he made some unexplainable mistakes in the last World Cup.

Steve McClaren: Least said, the better. Probably the worst England manager to date.

Fabio Capello: The test begins now.

  8. It's time for us to realise that England aren't the team we think they are. The players don't care about playing because they don't get paid. The only reason we don't slag off Cappello like Mclaren is because he did great things at a great club. Let's be honest Mclaren wasn't bad at boro. 1 league cup, uefa cup final and a regular top half finish.
It's time to get an English manager or someone who has managed in our league who knows the players and knows how they play. Not some sly Italian who just watched videos beforehand. We probarbly wouldn't have qualified for that world cup if we were not hosts. It's time to stop living in the past and get in some young players we'll miss the world cup 2010 but with experience well be one of the greatest.
And Owen is our best striker!!!!!

  9. England will never win the World Cup again and it is all down to the FA.
Look at the Premier Division. How many Eglish players are there? QED

  10. The GREATEST problem with the England national squad is the tabloids. They fear having a successful foreign manager and so have started slating him off at every opportunity.
    Proof:
    1) The Owen saga. They have been whinging for a manager to play players on their fitness and ability on the moment. Not on the appeal of their names. Capello did just that. Owen has been $%&^$ for England ever since Portugal. He has to do more to prove himself. But the tabloids have swallowed their credibility by clamouring for Owen's return. Had Owen been involved and played as he usuallu does, ie $%&$£, then Capello would have been spear-headed.
    2) The tabloids raise the expectation of the national team to impossible heights. This only puts pressure on the players and stops them from concentrating, contributing to what Terry described as 'fear of failure'. One may argue that the English clubs are the best in the world, but that is only because club managers have realised that it is useless to invest in mediocre English players. That there are so many foreigners is no excuse. Italy and Spain are full of foreigners and well . . .

Someone mentioned the need to have an England manager. Sure! That would be a solution. Harry Redknapp: Play Rooney on the right but nt Gerrard on the left cos that kills Gerrard . . . Any logic here? But still we argue that we should have a Kevin Keegan manage the squad, and then call in Sven to change a squad of no hopers and losers into a team that can beat Germany 5 -1 on their home soil. But we can always bring in Macca! He's British . . . but Macca wasn't the right choice. The toon failure should have been given the job. Does anyone actually see a British manager in charge of the top four, or a top European team? So why do we see them in charge of England?

  11. I was only 12 when i sat with my Dad and watched England beat West Germany 4-2 all those years ago live on tv. Yes it's been a long time and i don't know if i'll ever get that experience again, judging by the recent world cups and euros that's highly unlikely. Since those heady days we have had some great players that have come and gone and still we wait. We have a premier league that is probably the strongest in the world, but what about the english players, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Beckham, Cole, Ferdinand - world class i don't think so !. The premier league is awash with johnny foreigners cashing in on Italian and now Arab money, the young english player unless they are one of a kind don't stand a chance in hell of getting in various first teams. They will of course earn a fortune but where does that leave our England team ?. We will be sitting at home watching Brazil, Germany, Argentina when the big tournaments come along crying in our beer as usual. I don't see this changing the way things are going so sad as it may be i'll think of those days when we were the world champions !!!.

  13. I reckon its time to look ahead to euro 2012, lets get a decent manager and bring some players thru. Of course we will still be trying to play roonay as a striker and lampard beside gerrard but WTF at least we wont be pissed off when we do @#$% in this WC campaign. WAKE UP

  17. Bileenspain; I toatlly understand the 42 years comment, I've been there too. However look at the U21s tonight. If the seniors were to meet the U21s in a competitive match who would have the most 'passion' and commitment? Which team would still have something to prove and put playing for their country above playing for their club? Who would play with the most understanding of their own system? Which team would use players who are now limited to set pieces? Or players who are currently not showing any special form in their club side? Or players who have stopped developing and rely upon tired strategies. Or players who have had their chance and failed to impress many times? Which team would take the most notice of their manager's instructions? Gerrard and Beckham didn't last time.Which team would play players out of place? Which team would play with the most inhibition when things go against them? Which team has a history of disappointing its fans? I'm rarely pleased watching the England seniors but I would back Psycho's squad against Capello's every time. This is sounding more and more like an argument to scrap the senior team and just use the youngsters. I wonder...................anyway, thanks for the reply.

  18. Please someone tell Fabio we have got other options to pair with likes of Rooney up front with some spark like Owen had in his younger years, i think Agbonlahor is someone that should get some opportunities to pair with Rooney, England needs that sort of help.

they will never get chance to be big game players if they dont get some chances in friendly and lower grade qualifiers

England need some life in the seniors, they havent looked a scary threat for an age. Milner might have been on the block for longer but give Agbonlahor a chance, hes got a real chance to impress at the moment even Fabio can see as defence improve England lack a Torres but then doesnt act, lets start work on the youngsters now to create one!! Stop bringing out the has beens, i can't believe he has kept putting Heskey in a shirt

  19. I am not slagging off the England team, I am stating the bleedin obvious ,that we are NOT good enough ,and you could be right about our country having a bright future but I would like to see some success in my lifetime if possible ,the premier league is awash with cash ,and none of it is doing our international standing any good, you say I slag off the England team as though its forever ,my friend 42 years of winning nothing FEELS like forever and if you think different ,you are very easily pleased........

  20. I'd say go back to what we do best good old 4-4-2 with British manager who knows the leagues from premier down to div 2 not some foreigner. Only time i have seen our team play with true grit and heart is under an English manager that must tell us something. Sir alf and Sir bobby u guys did us proud. Until the FA bigwigs get it through their thick skulls and go British we will continue to do and win FA.
