Premier League - Nigerians could scrap Toon bid

Eurosport - Mon, 06 Oct 21:00:00 2008

The Nigerian consortium bidding to buy Newcastle has warned the crisis-club that they are ready to look elsewhere if a deal isn't completed soon.

FOOTBALL Newcastle United St James Park - 0

The African businessmen are believed to have tabled a £200 million offer after Newcastle owner Mike Ashley signalled his intention to sell up.

But the group are unhappy with the response from Newcastle so far and Chris Nathaniel, of NVA Management, who is the consortium's front man, insisted they were ready to pull out if negotiations don't go smoothly.

"We're talking to possible manager and key personnel for the club," Nathaniel told The Sun. "Once that is sorted, we'll fine-tune our offer.

"We're prepared to look at other options if our bid for Newcastle is not successful. I've been approached by several top Premier League club offering us opportunities to buy their clubs.

"People are having a go because the businessmen have not made themselves known. But I can assure everyone they are astute, respectable and wealthy men."

  1. In response to brainless. As your username suggests you probably are. quoting you "Gbenga.. people who are 'stealing' your oil are not necessarily white. They can be black or between. But scammers in Nigeria are all black.. Take this from a dark-skinned person! You bloody stupid racist!" Have you visited nigeria before? Do you know the goings-on in Nigeria with regards to oil contracts and power contracts that is being investigated in the House of Assembly? The answer is No. In as much as I wouldn't want to join issues with you, I would implore you to read other posts on this page and see if you couldn't find worse comments than Gbenga's. Just because he says white folks steal our oil (even if not always true)does not make him a racist. Those comments about nigerians being scammers could well have racist undertone.
Mike Asley but newcastle as a businessman and would like to make a profit but if he thinks he is going to make a killing he is joking. I would implore the businessmen to not pay more than the value of newcastle as it presently is. Sam Alardyce gave his opinion that Ashley bought newcastle in order to make quick profit, then you wonder why people make the comments that the nigerians would buy newcasle in other to make quick profit. We should look at ourselves before we make judgemnent on others.

  2. LARD ASHLEY HAS ALWAYS RECOGNISED HIS OPPORTUNITY WITH THE TOON - BUSINESS-'WISE' - A BRAND TO CAPITALISE ON, FROM THE CAPITAL. HE MAY HAVE GOT THE TOON INTO THE BLACK, BUT HIS VIRGIN WHITE VISION WAS FUNDAMENTALLY DIRTIED, FOOTBALL- 'WISE' ! HE COULDN'T GIVE A FIG ABOUT THE TOON, OR THE NEXT BUYERS' STANCE, AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE TOON, WHETHER THEY ARE 'BLACK' OR 'WHITE', OR 'STRIPED'! HE SEES MONEY, NOT FOOTBALL. THE NEXT LOT, WHOEVER THEY ARE, WHETHER THEY MATERIALISE OR NOT, MUST LEARN FROM HIS REJECTION BY TOON FANS, WHO ARE NOT DAFT, AND WHOSE PASSION FOR THE BEAUTIFUL GAME IS UNDISPUTED. I LOVE YOU KEVIN KEEGAN. HOWAY THE LADS! NZ TOM

  4. ismapek speak up and straight. You are NOT far from the truth. It's a pity alot of folks commenting on this subject seem and sound ignorant. They need further education beyond GCSE levels. They also need to emigrate far and wide to open up their minds.Newcastle Utd is a massive club in dire situation. They need to get out of this messy quagmire real quick. And it doesn't matter if the urgent help comes from Obafemi, Ameobi or Njitep. Get a 21st century perspective guys. KICK racism out of our beautiful Game and World. One Love.

  7. I'm just an outside observer to this whole Newcastle saga (albeit a sympathetic one), but I think even Newcastle fans would say that it's fair enough Ashley doesn't want to sell the club for 200m. 300m sounds like fair enough price tag as it will ever be and if they can come up with 200m but unwilling/unable to match the 300m (it wasn't even that was it? I remember reading from somewhere along the line of 280m) then they don't have what it takes to turn the club around anyways. Didn't Abrahimovic spend that much money just on transffers to shape Chelsea into what it is today? Everybody who ever buys anything will always want cheaper price, but whoever wants to buy Newcastle or any other premiership football club will have to show that they have serious money and serious plan for future, not just trying to get a bargain on some clubs misfortunes trying to make quick profit. It doesn't matter where the consortium is based. These guys could be from anywhere in the world but people will still have doubts untill it is properly revealed how seriously the bid is backed.

  10. Some of you call yourselves civilized and advanced but still condenm others. This man is looking for someone to buy his club and many people have offered but their offer isnt good enough. Now these businessmen from Nigeria have stepped up and made then highest bid which Ashley is considering. Everyone now is saying these people can't be trusted, they are scammers and will trick Ashley but let me ask you something, those other guys that have offered before the Nigerians, who are they? why aren't you calling them scammers?

Its really sad for people to assume everyone from a particular place is the same, just because you recieved an e-mail from someone telling you he is Nigerian and needs your bank account so he can send you money. This person can be from anywhere in this world heck he might your neighbor, if you don't want any part in the scam simply delete the message it's that easy. If you complain they stole your money is no one's fault but yours because it was your greed to take some stranger's property that led to that.

Am not trying to offend anyone but am simply trying to say don't judge a book by its cover.

  13. We can hardly be critical of Nigerian business men putting a bid together, particularly given the state of our economy at the moment. It just seems to me that this consortium cannot find the amount that would seal the bid. Ashley won't accept £200m, I'm sure. If it was £300m the deal would have been done by now, he would have jumped at it. He has put mega money into the club and obviously wants his money back, he's cleared all the debts and wants no more than the money he has put in. That seems fair to me.
Whatever the nationality of the takeover group, it doesn't matter as long as they have the real interest and desire to run the club, despite all the misgivings I have about the attitude of the fans throughout this sorry episode, it would be disastrous if the club was hung out to dry again.
We are always too sceptical about people's intentions and this group, like any other interested party, must get fed up with all the cynicism they receive.
My personal concern is that this group does not seem able to raise the stakes at the moment.

  14. I am a Nigerian and even though not many have commented on this post I can see (as if I was not aware) the negative image foreigners (especially those who have never visited) have of us as a people and as a nation. Its' true we have a lot of scandolously wealthy Nigerians not many of whom can boast of not being tainted (dont' want to subject themselves to rigourous checks) Maybe thats why these folks aren't ready to reveal themselves just yet. But there are those who have made legit money and Nigerians as a peolpe are hard working people who given the opportunity will do well in fact better than average (check records of those who school with you out there/do legit business out there). And there are those who have made it from scratch without government patronage. Anyway if the deal goes through the FAs' fit and propser rule will tell us some.

  16. I hope they do pull out, they are having a job putting the initial bid together, never mind sustaining the club going forward. Ashley might be fairly pi...d off with things as they are but when it comes to money the guy is as sharp as a needle, quite right too. Newcastle had a good opportunity with Ashley but their so-called fans put an end to it all, what plonkers they were. Don't you think that given time he would have put things right, including getting rid of Wise?

  20. In response to John P & ehamdam. Just because you get dodgy letters from nigerians does not mean all nigerians are dodgy. Its like seeing or knowing a stupid dutchman in Nigeria and Tag all ducth people as STUPID. You know you have more dodgy people here who are not nigerians. One thing I can asure you is that the nigerians buying into newcastle are not there for business but for the love of the game and their personal egos as premiership is very popular in nigeria. However, those unknown nigerians might be the moneybags who had amassed their wealth while in various government positions during the past (military or civilian). Even though I am not a fan of these unknown businessmen who had milked nigeria to the detriment of the average nigerians, the fact that they are buying into a club is for their own ego not for business reasons which might be a plus for the newcastle fans as funds would be available to buy players. I may be wrong and they could turn out to be respected nigerian businessmen too.
