Bosisio banned for positive dope test

Eurosport - Tue, 06 Oct 16:44:00 2009

Italian cyclist Gabriele Bosisio has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for EPO in an out of competition test last month, the International Cycling Union said in a statement.

CYCLING 2008 Giro Gabriele Bosisio - 0

The 29-year-old was caught out by a suprise out-of-competition test conducted by the UCI on September 2 at Rogeno.

LPR was the team of Italian Danilo Di Luca, who finished second in the Tour of Italy in May only to later be suspended for failing two doping tests during the race.

A UCI statement said Bosisio has been provisionally suspended, adding: "This decision is subsequent to reception of results from the WADA-accredited laboratory in Lausanne, which show adverse analytical findings (for recombinant EPO) from a urine sample taken during an out-of-competition test on September 2, 2009."

The UCI have been catching an increasing number of drugs cheats thanks to their revolutionary 'biological passport' scheme, which since its creation last year has charted the blood parameters of every pro in the world.

When blood samples are taken from riders, they are analysed and compared to other readings on his/her passport. When anomalies appear the rider is often targeted by the UCI with a random doping control, when urine samples are usually taken.

Such was the case with Bosisio. The statement added that he had been targeted after "the rider's blood profile, as part of the biological passport, looked suspicious".

Bosisio, who has the right to demand analysis of a B sample, will remain suspended until the Italian Cycling Federation decide to open disciplinary proceedings.

  1. The worry is that with the likes of Vino, Di Luca etc, we were supposed to be seeing the last legs of a dirty generation. Sadly, this is clearly not the case as there are still young riders like Bosisio, Sella, Ricco, Dekker etc who see doping as a way of advancing their careers. Tragic.

  2. it seems that doping is intrenched in Italian cycling. As a nation they are running out of top riders. Sella, Rebellin, Di Luca, Ricco the list goes on. Hopefully Nibali and co will have more sense.

  3. A life-ban for a first offence will never stand up under proper scrutiney as a) there isn't a dope test in existance which is 100% accurate/certain and b) to ban a professional athlete for life is a restriction on trade and goes against European employment laws...........I'm sure there's a whole host of other PC rubbish about human rights etc, which would make such action impossible to enforce. In reality it comes down to the teams and riders themselves to make a stand and not employ returning cheats like Basso, Vino, Ricco etc, but that won't happen whilst they're capable of winning races and the teams are desperate for success at any cost (the main reason we have this bl@@dy problem in the first place!).

  5. Pettachi was at Millram when he had his 'problems', so hardly fair to blame LPR. Likewise, DiLuca's habits stretch well back even before his time at Liquigas, so again hardly evidence of systematic doping within LPR. Let's get our facts straight before 2 + 2 = 5. The fact it is [yet] another Italian is a worry though.

  6. Besides banning the individuals, there should be a new ruling: if a team has two convicted cheats then the team itself should be suspended from all racing for say a 6mths-1 yr period. This would likely lose the sponsor, so a rider will *think* twice before endangering the livelihoods of all their team mates.

  9. This is a good thing guy's, these clowns are not ruining the sport they are being caught by the new system and to me this is good. This sends a message to the Idiots that their old ways are not acceptable anymore, and yet again reinforces that Cycling test's and hunt's cheats more than any other sport, but as in life some people are too stupid to get it.

  14. Come on people, help me out here, what is the word I am looking for? ........ Ah yes... IDIOT!

They are going to test you whenever and wherever they can, want and will. EPO tests are almost 100% effective now and the blood passport whilst initially seeming like a "witch hunt tool" is starting to show benefits...

It is a pity but if you try to cheat you will be caught!

    See you in 2011 maybe.
