Premier League - Paper round: Chelsea in for Vieira

Eurosport - Tue, 06 Oct 09:05:00 2009

Patrick Vieira was spotted in the stands at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, but just what significance did the former Arsenal midfielder's presence there have?

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Inter - Vieira - 0

Well, The Sun claims that Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti sees the France international as a possible replacement for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel when the pair head off to play in the African Nations Cup in January.

Vieira has made no secret of his desire to quit Internazionale - he has not featured for Jose Mourino's side this season - and a return to the Premier League is a clear option.

Of course his arrival at the Bridge would very much depend on Chelsea's appeal over their transfer ban, which at the moment prohibits them from signing anyone for the next two transfer windows.

Should the appeal be successful, Chelsea are likely to compete with Arsenal for the 33-year-old's signature.

David Sullivan, who is quitting Birmingham as Carson Yeung takes over at St Andrews, wants to buy West Ham - but only for a bargain price, considering the massive debts the club have (Daily Mirror).

Alex Ferguson's outburst about Alan Wiley looks like having serious implications, and not just for the Manchester United manager, whom the FA have asked to explain himself.

The Daily Mail reports that the official is set to go the same way as Anders Frisk - into retirement. Friends of the referee have claimed that the episode has left him considering walking away from the sport.

United starlet Danny Welbeck is set to break into the big-time with a new £12,000 a week deal. The 18-year-old has impressed Ferguson and will be rewarded with a four-year contract (The Sun).

Across town, Manchester City are tracking Lyon youngster Miralem Pjanic, who impressed for the French side on Champions League duty against Debrecen last week. "I am happy other clubs are showing an interest," the £5 million-rated 19-year-old said in The Sun.

The Times leads on its back page with 'Fury over England TV blackout', helpfully noting what we can all watch for free - Harry Hill's TV Burp and The X Factor and New You've Been Framed - while England's game against Ukraine is shown on the internet at a cost of up to £11.99.

Everybody's favourite Premier League footballer Jimmy Bullard (remember him?) is set to make his comeback for Hull City tonight in a reserve game against Bolton following surgery on his knee (Daily Mirror).

Fulham's American contingent could be further bolstered as boss Roy Hodgson is eyeing a swoop for Brek Shea, the FC Dallas defender who would cost around £2m (The Sun).

And finally, Gary Megson has slammed the door in the face of Middlesbrough, who wanted to sign Andy O'Brien on loan to boost their promotion bid. Meanwhile, Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil is set to be subjected to a £2m bid from Fulham (Daily Mirror).

#15 Bajulai. It wasn't a long time ago that some Arsenal fans were complaining that AW was not spending enough.

  18. What a load of @#$%, why the Media always tells lies. Vieira has played for us this season (FACT) so why The Sun says he has not? Just because a man shows up in the stadium to watch a match it always means he wants to sign for them? if this is true then maybe Capello wants to put his football boots on again and play for all the EPL teams as he has been watching the games, what retards.
I am an Inter fan and would be surprised if he left as he is starting to look good for us and does not play like a typical 33 year old. Never say never in football but I hope he stays he still has something to offer.

From Diehard Italian Fan, on Tue 6 Oct 7:28PM
