Shawcross began October in style, opening the scoring in his team's 1-1 draw at West Brom and their 2-1 win against Colchester.
The 20-year-old, an ever present in Stoke's back line this season, continued his goalscoring form into the latter part of the month, finishing an outstanding team performance at Crystal Palace by hitting the winner in a 3-1 victory.
Also short-listed for the October award in the Championship were Marlon King of Watford, Ishmael Miller of West Brom (on loan from Manchester City), and Leicester's Patrick Kisnorbo.
Chris Kamara, chairman of the awards panel, said: "Ryan Shawcross is a young defender with a big future in the game.
"He has an excellent pedigree, having come through Manchester United's youth system and his displays this month have shown unbelievable maturity for someone so young.
"Ryan not only possesses terrific defensive ability but also has a great eye for goal, chipping in with three vital strikes for the Potters this month."
