Shane Byrne got his 2009 World Superbike campaign off to a blistering start, going fastest in testing at Portimao.

The British Superbike champion took his Sterilgarda Ducati to the top of the timesheets at the Portuguese circuit where the final round of the 2008 season took place last weekend.

Byrne set a best lap of one minute 43.6 seconds on the final afternoon of the test - nearly a second faster than Sterilgarda riders Max Biaggi and Ruben Xaus managed on Sunday.

American Ben Spies went second-quickest for Yamaha Italia, three tenths adrift, with Biaggi, now riding for Aprilia, third.

Spies's British team-mate Tom Sykes was fourth-fastest, lapping in 1:44.5, while Honda's Leon Haslam followed up his weekend WSB podium finish with a 1:44.6 lap.

Sykes said: "For me it's been a very good test. Having done two days I now feel fully part of the team. It was quite difficult arriving on Tuesday morning for the first day of the test, facing a new bike, a new circuit, and a new team.

"For the 2009 bike, considering it's at a very early stage of development, I think it's a fantastic package. The feeling coming out of the corner is unbelievably smooth, the power is so controllable, the whole bike remains incredibly stable. There is still lots to be done but the outcome is already very good."

Another Briton, Cal Crutchlow, dominated World Supersport testing. His best lap, a 1:44.9, would have placed him eighth in the WSB field.

  1. An excellent start and nice to see Cal crutchlow get recognition in the Supersport category. As per previous messages, I feel the Brits will all do very well, Cal crutchlow to give Andrew Pitt a serious run for his money. Lets hope the tragic loss of Craig Jones will not be in vain and his great pal Cal will get the trophy that sadly was never to be.

  3. Sorry g.gcww, but the year of the drugs problem and points taken off was 2000, when he rode the Yamaha R7. He came close on the Renegade Ducati in 2004 though, which sort of shows he can ride a Twin so who knows, he might just win it next season. His main problem year in year out is consistency, or rather a lack of it. He finishes race one in the gravel and then goes out and wins race two, while his rivals are just steadily racking up the points. Corser finished ahead of him in this years championship, he never won a race all year but finished on the podium 13 times. Haga won seven races and scored 11 podium finishes, but also had to dig gravel out of his helmet several more times than Corser.

  4. pfy1101, the last time Haga rode a Ducati he would have won the championship had they not taken points off of him for some medication he took early in the season for a flue virus and he ended up losing that championship by just a couple of points. Next year he should be the main contender for the title but there's still many riders that could throw a spanner in the works yet. I think the BMW and Aprillia will need quite a bit of development before they start winning races on them.

  5. With Bayliss retired i can't wait for next season, Would have loved to have seen Corser stay at Yamaha and have a good shot at the championship, Haga will be strong on the Ducati, Aprilia and BMW entering the frey and a large contingent of british riders on competative machinery. Now about Brands Hatch.......

  7. tracy e, I'd say it's more than possible with 5 really good british lads there this year and on decent bikes too so there not just grid fillers, there all contenders. Best of luck to every one of them.

  8. Brit 1,2,3 would be an amazing thing to see on the podium this year and to be honest i think we may see it.

  9. post 3, they should have got rid of Frabrizio and put Shakey on the second factory Ducati then given him a year to learn the tracks with Haga as his team mate. After that he'd take the title I'm sure. WSB will be the best series next year and good luck to all the brits, lets hope that Tommy Hill can come back good after all the pain he's been through.

  10. Well done Shakey , you should have been on the works bike . Come on all the brits and also the adopted one's .

  11. l have followed Shakey's career from the outset, (remember FB race riot?) he is a class-act and a very natural rider, and with just that bit of luck that every rider needs ( and support from the Ducati race dept!!) he should do well this year, l think WSB will be outstanding next year!!!!!!!...COME ON YOU BRITS!

From Kevin, on Thu 6 Nov 10:28PM
  12. Well done Shakey and Tom. Well done Leon too as you only got half a days testing as you had to share a bike with your team mate. Cal Crutchlow did so well on the supersport too so it's looking good for all the Brits
