Williams reflects on Todt changes

Fri, 06 Nov 10:07:28 2009

Frank Williams says he is not worried that Jean Todt will revert to his "hard" ways in his new role as FIA president. Williams knows the Frenchman best from his 14 years in charge of Ferrari.

"His methods weren't methods that we would use," he said in an interview with Arabian Business. "He was then a difficult character, very hard to get on with."

However, Williams believes Todt has had to adopt a difference approach now that he is in charge of the sport's governing body.

"I met him recently (and) I think he has taken some charm lessons," he said.

Williams, meanwhile, described Todt's predecessor Max Mosley as "seriously unfairly clever" and "almost impossible to beat in any argument".

  2. The trait that Mr. Frank Williams refers to is one shared by persons who are seriously intellectual as well as those traits every megalomaniac exhibits and those are all wrapped up in the absolute conviction that they are always right. Mosley rarely lost an arguement because he usually picked his fightw well and always was able to situate his defense on his own turf. Given that, he was always able to be fully confident that he would win because he always controlled the variables. When he ended up on the wrong end, which was very rarely, he was always prepared to equivocate, assigning the blame to others.

Todt, on the other hand is typical of men of smaller stature in that he is always compensating. He does this mainly by being almost insensibly difficult, abrupt, and abrasive. When required he could be just as charming and persuasive as most men of great responsibility. I keep on relating to his long term relationship with Ross Brawn, a man known to be rather short and abrasive with persons outside his sphere of responsibility. That they apparently got along famously gives me hope that he will be significantly less arbitrary than Mosley who really didn't know any other way.

  7. the real adrian Mad Max, of course. I hope deep down that Todt will use his obvious talents to tell Mosely where to stick it.
I also suspect that Renault are holding out to see who Todt elects as his No1. If he keeps Max's sniffers in place I suspect they will have had enough of their nasty biased habits and invest more in other forms of motor sport.
