Towering Valuev makes Haye look like a lightweight

Fri, 06 Nov 17:20:00 2009

Towering world heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev weighed in seven stones heavier than Britain's David Haye ahead of their WBA title bout in Nuremberg on Saturday.

The challenger took to the scales at 15 stones eight pounds (99 kg), his heaviest ever, with the Germany-based Russian weighing in lighter than usual at 22 stones eight pounds (143 kg).

Former world cruiserweight champion Haye, who takes a 21-1 record into the bout with the 'Beast from the East', is almost a foot shorter than his seven foot (2.13 metres) opponent.

Valuev is the tallest and heaviest world champion of all time and has yet to be floored or knocked out in his 16-year professional career, with only one defeat in 51 bouts.

"They call him David versus Goliath," American boxing promoter Don King told Sky Sports News. "The only thing that is wrong is that David left his stones in his slingshot in the UK. So he's in trouble."

  1. "I'm as freakishly fast as Valuev is freakishly big. That's the key to this fight. I'm never going to be bigger or stronger than a guy like Valuev, no matter how hard I train or now many weights I lift. My main advantage going into this fight is raw speed, agility and explosiveness. I'll be able to hit him multiple times for every one punch he attempts to land on me. (D Haye in his own words) - I couldnt agree more.

  2. Haye Maker in the 5th Round- it'll be the Beast from the East's last round on his feet. Can't wait to watch 23 stone of poetic Russian lard hit the canvas. Haye is too fast, too aggressive, and has the discipline to wait for an opening...Goodnight Valuev. Vladamir and Vitali - you fellas are next.
