Webber: Keeping Silverstone on calendar a 'no-brainer'

Fri, 06 Nov 16:00:22 2009

Red Bull Racing star Mark Webber has urged that it is a ‘total no-brainer’ for Silverstone and the British Grand Prix to remain on the F1 World Championship calendar in 2010 – as the clock ticks down...

Formula One Management (FOM) chief executive Bernie Ecclestone handed the celebrated ‘Home of British Motor Racing’ and its owners the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) a deadline of the end of this week to agree to the offer that he has put on the table for next year and beyond – or face the event being removed from the 2010 schedule altogether [see separate story – click here].

Silverstone only re-entered the frame as a venue for the British Grand Prix following the final failure last week of Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd (DVLL) chief executive Simon Gillett to secure the necessary £135 million funding to bring the Leicestershire circuit and its outdated facilities up to the required F1 standard to honour the 17-year agreement concluded with Ecclestone on the eve of the 2008 event.

With Donington’s hopes officially dead in the water and the sad and unfortunate débâcle at an end, Silverstone is now the only hope for a British round of the world championship next season – and Webber, who finished runner-up to RBR team-mate Sebastian Vettel there this year, insisted that the race must be saved.

“We have to have the British Grand Prix at Silverstone,” the UK-domiciled Australian told BBC Look East. “It’s a total no-brainer. It’s a sensational circuit, and it’s always been very well-attended.

“I know all the other F1 drivers love coming here; it’s got that amazing feel about it in terms of the very, very quick corners. It’s a challenging circuit – one that is back to the roots of what F1 is all about.”

  1. Nobody (Other than Bernie The Poison Dwarf) want to lose Silverstone.
I can only deduce that Bernie want to free up the GB GP slot so he can sell it to the highest bidder and line his pockets even more.
He really is a loathsome creature, his early opportunities were only ever in the British Motor Sports Arena, and he repays this munificence by stabling the UK Fans in the back; betraying the Motor Sports Industries; and selling F1 heritage to Mamon
This vile little excuse for a man should go as soon as possible, and take his Napoleon Complex with him.

Silverstone could be saved and so could the British Grand Prix even without the Silverstone circuit if that fails. Their is a way and Formula1Police has discovered this way through logic and smart thinking. What if 100 million pounds could be raised to be invested into Silverstone or build a whole new circuit. This is my way, and that is that the British based FOTA teams over a three year period invest about 5 million pounds once a year into FOTA trust fund, teams such as McLaren, William's, Red Bull, Manor, Lotus F1, Renault-Benetton, Brawn, Force India, and USF1. And in return the teams can have let's say a kind of outpost base ( a mini factory ) where teams can build and manufacture spare parts for their cars. This circuit will also be the teams test and development circuit. Cosworth could also have a engine base their with a technical centre. The circuit will also be a multi purpose circuit, to host sports car events, and touring car events. And maybe other teams like Ferrari, Toro Rosso, Sauber and Campos F1 may also show interest into this project and invest in this as a minor invester and just be allowed to test their there. I know their is no testing during the season but if the testing ban can be lifted for three days in May, three days in June, and three days in July, so teams can test mid season upgrades. Plus two separate testing days in both June and August to give young drivers coming up through the ranks some time in an F1 car. I know this idea is a long shot but it could really save the British F1 race in the long term, but until them race at Silverstone.

Now I will transalate this for the muppets who cannot understand what Mark said.

Have to keep Britis GP at Silverstone, it's a very, very easy decision to make, great circuit and fans.

    Does that help muppets?

  6. Elias et.al.: If you are using "no-brainer" to assume an unfavorable result to a decision to be made, you can save yourselves further embarrassment by looking it up. In this case, "keeping" is the easy decision implied by the term so there is no confusion at all. In a more general sense, especially in business, you'll find that it means "a transaction so FAVORABLE that no intelligence is required when deciding whether to enter into it". I'll assume you know what "favorable" means.

As for the GB GP, one has to wonder why a Spanish champion from 3 years ago justifies two GPs to be held in Spain. The experience in Germany, e.g., would indicate that the public interest is fickle and the current state of the German GP is due to the lack of a Schumacher as a potential contender. Does anyone think that the Turks feel their money was well spent, now that their race is on the verge of being dropped? While I like the Sao Paulo circuit and enjoy the race, I don't see that it should get a free ride while the GB race should be in jeopardy.

I could go on but IMO the bottom line is that govt. participation is undesirable and will result in an unsustainable situation and if the traditional venues are lost, the sport will collapse. Apparently those in power are blinded by greed, i.e. the "fast buck" and self-promotion - stupidity does not seem to be an option. There's a simple solution here but the election of Todt will prevent the required progress in uhh, decision making.

  7. Mark Webber is absolutely right Of course Silverstone should be on the list. It's just that greedy little runt wanting even more money. Lets face it the greedy squirt could fund 2 GP's in the UK out of his loose change. We have got rid of blue max so now lets get rid of the money grabber and get a real F1 person in charge whose sole intrest is not putting more money in his/her pocket.

  12. We need to keep a british gran prix in the Calander as Britain has played a big part in F1 and still does with teams based over here and we have had 2 british f1 winners in the last 2 years. To lose it would be wrong!

Mark Webber continues the Oz chip on the shoulder by going against the British Grand Prix and like all biggots should be ignored. F1 without The British Grand Prix would be like having a Christmas cake without the icing good but not perfect.

What you mean is he's working on the Thatcher principle; make sure your successor is worse than you to make yourself look good.
