Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is convinced St James' Park will always be St James' Park as the club prepares for yet another fans' backlash.
Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias caused outrage last week when they revealed the naming rights for the stadium were up for grabs as they attempt to bring new revenue into the club.
They did little to abate that fury when they confirmed earlier this week that the 52,000-capacity venue will now be known as the sportsdirect.com@St James' Park Stadium as the search for a long-term sponsor gets under way.
However, Hughton believes the name change will make little difference in practice.
He said: "I sympathise with the supporters because they are a massive, massive part of this club. But I am quite sure that in a year's time, two years' time, 10 years' time, people will still refer to the stadium as St James'.
"It's not like a club that has actually moved its stadium. I can understand where the supporters are coming from, but in everybody's eyes, it will still be St James'."

Ashley to Houghton, "Well said Christopher, now there's a good dog. Now roll over and Uncle Mike will tickle your tummy as promised".
BTW did anyone see Lambastard on Sky Sports the other day talking about investing in 15, 16 and 17 year olds? He said the youth are the furure of the club when in fact he means in January we'll see a couple of kids that we aquire for feck all, pay them peanuts and sell them for profit once they are the finished product.
Come on Chris grow some balls and stand up the fat controller for some things at least.
shaun sounds kinda tastey - tried it?
Ting Tong and Nezter. W @ nkers of the highest order.
Comment 2. Marnio - you sad man! Poverty Park eh? Here's something that might interest Marnio from Peru. Plenty of poverty there.
Peruvian Fried Guinea Pig (Ayacucho-style)
CUY CHAQTADO
1 guinea pig, de-haired, gutted, and cleaned
1/2 c. flour
1/4 - 1/2 t. ground cumin
salt and black pepper to taste
1/2 c. oil
Pat dry the skin of the guinea pig and rub in the cumin, salt, and pepper. Preheat oil. Dust the carcass with the flour and place it on its back in the oil, turning to cook both sides. Alternately, the guinea pig can be cut and fried in quarters.
Serve with boiled potato or boiled manioc root, and a salad of cut tomatoes and slivered onions bathed in lime juice and a bit of salt.
i don't beleeeeeeeeeive it!!!!
feck me even chelski now want to copy us!!!
bet fatshley is smiling into his lard sarnies this mornin!!!
Of course Hughton is cool over it. His just been given a permanent job and hasn't got the balls to say anything negative about the board. He's scared of Ashley.
I can't believe they've messed with the name, how much of an insult is that to the heritage of the club.
Well Hughtons mad then coz he trys to care about the fans is changing the name caring about the fans not likely
oh look i have no life so i know, i'll go spam abuse about other football clubs. sad really, maybe you should concentrate on your own clubs and let the newcastle fans deal with these stories.
fact is even with all the @#$% going on, the club still has more genuin fans that care than other 95% of the country's football clubs
WHAT! !
I thought i was renamed the OXO arena,
Home of the laughing stock
marnio from peru... love ye!
Ha ha ha ha.
Good to see the geordies are having the backside torn out of them by a cokney geeeeeeeeeeeeeeezer.
Keep it up Ashley, mate. Great job.

didn't even read you, saw your name attached and merely gave you the thumbs down as i am sure your comment will be as unfunny as all your other comments - you tool.
hello my georgie friends, it marnio here from the peru.
my friends what has happened to your football team? it has become the joke. whenever my family hear news reports about the newcastle they laugh like the ticklish hyena that have the feather stuck in its bottom.
the georgies were at one time the famous for the eating the most meat and pastry pies in the whole world, drinking the vast quantities of beer and having the proud football team. now the football team is finished.
mr ashbie has renamed the ground to help raise money to feed his players and their families. many people in newcastle are starving, fighting against the cold and falling behind the rest of the civilisation. most of the georgies are still in the 70s both in fashion sense, hair cuts and mentality.
it good mr ashbie rename the ground. st james park held too many bad memories for the fans. maybe under this new name the newcastle maybe better team and actually win a trophy.
i think the mr ashbie should rename the team to something more suitable to the location like " poverty united " or "fatty talentless athletic" or "bitterly cold northern sheet hole f c"
then the georgies would be much more at the home with their surroundings.
keep up the good the work mr ashbie, you deserve the medal for trying to work up there with the mentally disadvantaged in the community.
Renaming a stadium is always going to be an issue with fans. This is more so at Newcastle because of who we have in charge. Its obvious that, again, he has thought of a course of action and not consulted anyone in or outside the boardroom. But to me, it'll always be St James Park. Always has been, always is and always will be. Regardless of any name. The only way it'll ever be considered different is if it is moved and a new ground re-built elsewhere. Thats when you've got to literally kick off.
