League One - Copppell rules out Brighton role

PA Sport - Fri, 06 Nov 15:59:00 2009

Steve Coppell has ruled himself out of the running to become the new manager of Brighton.

Steve Coppell - 0

Coppell was among the favourites to succeed Russell Slade, who was sacked by the Seagulls last Sunday, and return to the club he left in 2003. But chairman Tony Bloom has now been forced to look elsewhere.

Bloom told The Argus: "Steve was one of the first names to spring to mind, and would have been a leading candidate for the job, but on initial contact he ruled himself out."

He added: "He is enjoying his time out of the game after leaving Reading last summer and I think only a very high-profile job could tempt him back into football at this time.

"We have had a high number of quality applicants and have now refined the shortlist and will continue with the process of evaluating and interviewing the leading contenders."

  1. Are you arrogant or what, Karen? I don't see what a fan of a team which has been falling like a stone for the last few years has to tease others about. Not long ago, S'ton where playing the likes of Arsenal and ManU, now they are in the relegation zone of League one playing the likes of Wycombe Wanderers (no offence meant to the latter).

On the other hand, I do admire your courage for still admitting to be a fan of theirs!

  5. I am damn glad that the club is looking for a new manager. I have written many weeks ago that the club should get a new manager. I knew Slade couldnt get the club up the ladder. Have to be quick , get the manager and get to Championship league soon.

  8. Steve Coppell is suffering a little bit of burnout. The vacation will do him good. He will be back. Football is in his blood. If Brighton is willing to wait, they might have an excellent manager to lead up to greater heights...
