Premier League - Torres to play on after hospital

Fernando Torres is back at Liverpool's Melwood training complex after a whistle-stop trip to Valencia for a second opinion on his groin injury.

The striker visited a Liverpool hospital for further tests after flying back to Merseyside with the rest of the squad following the 1-1 Champions League draw with Lyon.

Torres then visited a Spanish specialist who has worked with him before and is also favoured by Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez from his time at Valencia.

It is now expected the 25-year-old will do light training over the weekend and is still in contention to play against Birmingham on Monday.

Torres is believed not to want an operation on the problem, which is not a full hernia but a deeper groin injury affecting his adductor muscle.

He is also thought to want to play for Spain against Argentina next Saturday at his former home ground, the Vicente Calderon stadium of Atletico Madrid.

  2. I think this game could go either way. LFC is known to pull it out against the best, but for sure Chelsea are looking strongest at the moment. Must say I've been expecting the Drogba vs Torres fight, but this time will be in unequal terms. The Blues have the best midfield at the moment, whereas L'pool are really struggling. It is a no contest game. However, I'm looking forward to this clash and it would be striking if the reds take it home. It will make a great first half of the season, as we'd be having 5-6 teams contending for the top!

  7. Torres is being used by Benitez to try and salvage his season and boost his future job prospects. By playing him whilst injured he is risking the players future career, the selfish paella munching Spanish twot. This is harking back to the sixties and serventies when players had their careers ended earlier through too many cortisone injections and no consideration for their future from managers and coaches. It scandalous, the Premierhip should step in and stop clubs from playing injured players. Hyrdocortisone should be a banned substance, after all it is a performance enhancing drug!

  11. Torres is a great player but playing with an injured groin is asking for trouble. It will not repair itself by playing only resting.
