Your view: Don't punish Agassi

Eurosport - Wed, 04 Nov 16:29:00 2009

Eurosport Yahoo! readers do not believe Andre Agassi should be punished by tennis authorities after he revealed he took the recreational drug crystal meth back 1997

Andre Agassi 2009 - 0

However, the issue has divided you, with a sizeable minority clearly hurt by the eight-times Grand Slam champion's admission.

The revelation seems to have split the tennis world: both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have spoken about their disappointment towards Agassi but Andy Roddick has come out in support of his hero.

We asked: Should tennis authorities punish Andre Agassi after he revealed he took crystal meth and speed?

What you have been saying:

Andywytchard: Agassi was my favourite player when I was young and I'm disappointed with his admission that he took drugs. However, for all those using Marion Jones and other examples as a reason why there are double standards in sport I should point out that Jones was involved in performance enhancing drugs while crystal meth is certainly not performance enhancing. In fact it probably has the opposite effect. Should professional athletes face penalties when they use recreational drugs? Absolutely but the penalties should differ from those who are caught using performance enhancing drugs.

carolcoupland: I think Agassi was a bit silly to be taking drugs but as it is not sports enhancing I guess it shouldn't really be an issue. I admire him for coming out and being honest. It's not a commodity we see much these days. So if it's not sports enhancing then the question is how good would he have been without it?

Matthew.robins: It's always difficult to have too much respect for a sportsman's 'honesty' when they make a revelation in their forthcoming memoirs. It begs the question - if you really wanted to get it off your conscience, why not just mention it in passing during one of your many interviews, for which you don't stand to make several million dollars? That said, non-performance enhancing = who cares really?

Tankusu54: Agassi has always been my hero when it comes to tennis, but this confession has really cast a doubt on all his achievements. Please let all sports men and women learn from all these issues concerning drugs. Just imagine all the trophies and money that he won throughout his career. It is honestly a big disappointment.

Anne h: The point everyone seems to have missed is how Agassi has glorified the experience. He may as well take out an advert telling everyone drugs make you feel great. I accept people are human, make mistakes, have low points but he didnt' need to tell anyone. Some things are best left unsaid. It's an obvious marketing ploy to sell his book and that's embarrassing.

  1. The strictness of coprehenssive use of drugs isn't much different than the alcohol prohibition. The ussage of heavy drugs should be enforced, though the recreational ones should be okayed.

  3. Drugs are completely opposite to the meaning of the sport, but what makes difference is to tell the truth even tough it is hard as it was for Agassi. I`m surprised that anyone asked why he`s telling now? He`s setting up a pioneer example for his colleagues, revealing the darks side of the sport and pressure that sportsmen are bearing with, also showing that lying is useless and that you`ll want to have a clear conscience at the end. He could stay quiet till the end of his life and he would stay one of the best tennis players ever, worshiped by people. He had chosen to tell the truth. That`s the fair play and that`s what real sportsmen do.

  4. British Guy: are you not exagerrating a little bit? Crucifiction, racism... Simply because people are less willing to turn their back on somebody, who has always been their hero, and who has done a lot for tennis during and after his career.

First, don't forget that Serena is an active player, and as such, her actions are always subject to criticism, while a retired legend is "untouchable" to some extent, not particularly for his own merit, but also because his fans are unwilling to blacken the image they have of him.

I think there's no reason to shout racism when people are only partial: and it can be attributed to Serena's and Agassi's respective personalities. Totally rejecting any kind of racism, I think that on the whole, Serena's personality makes it less easy to symphatize with her.

I accept, that as a sportsman, Agassi's drug case is more serious than anything Serena ever did. That said I agree with you that Serena should not be punished further, and it would be perfectly insane to ban her from Grand Slam events.
But from a purely human point of view, taking drugs as a result of a wrong decision is less blameworthy than frequent repulsive conduct, and more easy to forgive.

As you asked: What world are we building, if we let one failure ruin a man's life-work and character in our estimation? I admit I wouldn't like to see Agassi being dragged through the mire. The indignation at Serena may have been louder, but now of course more is at stake.

  10. What Agassi took was not a performance enhancing drug & the penalty would have been much shorter, 3 months & not 2 years. This is not long enough to have ended his career.
It was obviously only over a very short period of time otherwise he would have tested positive the next time he was checked & then the 'took it by mistake' excuse would have been shown to be a lie.
The fact that he was rapidly going down in the rankings prove that it certainly didn't help his game. AND of course it shows that Brooke Shields was not conducive to his career as this happened when he was about to get married to her, or soon afterwards.
He must have realised his mistake fairly soon (which hsn't come out in the revelations) as not long afterwards he was working hard at his fitness & playing Challengers to pick up his ranking enough to get back into the main ATP t'ments.
What no-one seems to have mentioned, is that all this appears to be a publicity stunt which is probably being orchestrated by the PR people of the publishers. That is why we get this extract & not what happened to put him back on the right track..

  11. Andre Aggasi Great tennis player and was always such a pleasure to watch him play. Who gives a s**t about him taking some minor recreational drugs? Only the s**ts with no life.

  12. Agassi should be publicly stripped of all titles. Noone can reasonably expect to stick tjhe middle finger(as Agassi has)up to his tennis peers and expect to get away with it. It prett5y poor judgement on hia paRT,

  14. i think agassi over dose of the drug, and the effect is not given rest since 1997 till the day he confessed it out, well the law should take effect on him also so that others will learn from that well

  15. BRITISH GUY, DrugAssi is Persian as his father is Iranian, so you can't really use racism as an argument here.

  16. Drug addict piece of sh'it. Why not punishing him? The messages now are if ''you don't get caught now you will be safe tomorrow'' and ''It is ok to take drugs. Look at Agassi''... The world is becoming a big gang-hood because these role models are nothing but sick liars. Andre DrugAssi should get all his Grand Slams withdrawn from him with interest on the money he received.

  17. nonsense heading.Everybody was shouting at Serena and calling for her crucifixion. Now that it is a white who even has less slams than Serena, people are racialling asking for his forgiveness. How come that we want to condone with a cheat and crucify someone's outburst which was even caused by a wrong juddgement from a line judge? What a world are we building? To favour our race and crucify someone who is not of the same race like us even if his/her crime is of a lower level? Serena has already been given a maximum fine, the USTa are still investigating to see whether she can be stripped off of her single prize money and also if should would be banned again for at least two grand slam events.Up till date many are still supporting all these sanctions on Serena and the same people are asking for Agassi to be forgiven. Why all these hatred for the William sisters? Are they not also human? If Agassi should be forgiven, then drug use should be legalised in tennis.

From BRITISH GUY, on Thu 5 Nov 2:48PM
  18. @ AnilS: While your point that it was unfair to the players he beat is valid - he was using the drug in 1997, and he won the French in 1999 - you cannot arrive to any conclusions about whether he'd win the French, since it would have been out of his suspension period by quite some time.

@Katy: What Agassi has given you or the boys in Las Vegas is irrelevant. If he wanted to come clean in the first place, he could have done so immediately, instead of lying to the ATP - so not a lot of courage there, I think. You're just having a problem incorporating his drug use with the image you've got of him, and that's understandable.

From Petar, on Thu 5 Nov 2:30PM
  19. Although I don't think the tennis association should punish tennis players for taking recreational drugs, it is only fair that Agassi is, so that all players are treated the same. Whether Agassi is a hero is irrelevant, and it angers me to think that Hingis was banned from tennis for taking cocaine when no supposed action is going to be taken against Andre.

    From Chuan-Zun, on Thu 5 Nov 1:49PM
  20. Isn't he clever , getting all this attention for his book? I doubt he even took the drug and it's no worse than drinking or smoking.

Who is the next one to write a book? Marat Safin perhaps, he might say he had sex with Richard Gasquet in the players locker room. The possibilities are endless. Everybody loves money.
