World Cup - Royal medal for Sir Bobby

Eurosport - Fri, 06 Nov 08:16:00 2009

Former England and Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson is set to be immortalised with a special Royal Mint medal normally reserved for the Royal Family.

FOOTBALL Bobby Robson - 0

Robson, who guided England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1990, died in July at the age of 76 after a long-running battle against cancer.

The medal features a portrait of Sir Bobby on one side, and badges of the clubs he played for and managed on the other.

Some of the proceeds from the sale of the medal will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, a charity supporting detection and treatment of cancer.

Lady Elsie Robson, Sir Bobby's widow, said: "Our family was overwhelmed by the kind words from all over the world at the passing of my husband.

"Bobby's thirst for life was unquenchable and I'm sure he would be delighted to know that his foundation will benefit as a result of sales of this beautiful medal."

  3. Ian from Asia, get back under the rock that you have obviously crawled from under!!! Firstly we are not "Brits", Sir Bobby was English! Secondly it's "Football" not "soccer". So maybe you need to do some revision on the "Mother Tongue" of ENGLAND? Which by the way the last time I spoke it still was?

  4. If the appallingly poor English language as used in these banal comments is a reflection of the effects of Soccer in the U.K. all credit to Asia where the standards of the English Language are far superior to those used in the country 'claiming' it, arrogantly, as its Mother Tongue - shame be upon you Brits - or are you?

  5. How can the fan living abroad buy one of these pieces of nostalgia. Everyone in football knows how much respect Sir Bobby has. I would like to buy one of these medals for my family. Thank You.

  7. Mike Onyibe- not all Christians think it's blasphemous to honour a good man, just because football is more popular than church. Your reference to the monarch is an earthly tribute and has nothing to do with Christ.
Bobby Robson was a good man, and I hope this medal issue raises lots of money for his charity. God Bless.

  9. Human greatness is not what u think about yourself, it's what people think about u, in their hearts, their souls and whole being. It is interesting to observe that the UK today has turned FOOTBALL into her leading cultural AND spiritual god. Every Sunday, rather than go to the church of the Christian God that their monarch swore to defend, the people flood to the Football stadiums, the arena where worship is conducted. The football is the amulet, the players are the servants, the coaches their priests. When a high priest like Sir Bobby Robson dies, he must be IMMORTALIZED. That's it. You like u gree, u no gree go and die. FINISH. O pari, o gugo, case closed.

  11. SORRY I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT AFTER ALL HE WAS ONLY DOING WHAT HE WAS BEING PAID TO DO.HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DIE EVERY DAY THAT WERE DOING SOMETHING GREAT FOR U.K BUT YOU DONT HEAR ABOUT THEM AS THEY DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL.lIFE SHOULD NOT REVOLVE AROUND FOOTBALL AS THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS GOING ON IN THE WORLD THAT NEED TO BE SORTED.MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO TO HIS WIDOW FOR HER LOSS.
