Fletcher set to soldier on

Darren Fletcher is hoping a pain-easing injection will delay the need for ankle surgery until next summer.

The Manchester United midfielder returned to action after a month on the sidelines in Tuesday's six-goal thriller with CSKA Moscow. It should mean Fletcher will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, when United attempt to depose the current Premier League leaders.

"A bit of bone has broken off the back of my ankle and stuck out about an inch," he revealed. "Every time I bend it is causing a bit of pain so I have had an injection to clear it up for a while. It should be okay to the end of the season but the plan is to get me through to the summer and then do something then."

Scotland's failure to qualify for next year's World Cup Finals in South Africa provides the perfect gap for Fletcher to have the operation.

"I have had it for a couple of years now and the build-up of fluid and other medical things the doctors know more about than me has been constantly aggravating it," he said.

"Striking a ball or bending the ankle in a flexed position or pushing off it hurts.

"It got to the point where it was too sore to train and play. Something had to be done and I had the injection."

  2. United players are explaining why they are shipping goals, it's not meant as an excuse they are just explaining, not whinging. We still have the best squad in the league and could still win it! (four in a row) Is it possible!
Stating what injury someone has got just explains why they may be out for periods of the season, it's not moaning about having pain killing injections. The quality of medical care is far superior to that of the 70's and 80's, so they will not risk players for a short term fix, when it could ruin their career, although the odd misjudgement occurs. Lets hope Nevelle, Rio, Hargreaves and now Fletcher come back as strong as ever. At the moment Chelsea look the quality team, but we will see on Sunday.

To be honest Trafford Utd showed what an embarrassment they are becoming to English football both the team and their whisky drinking red nosed manager who seems to be publicly having a breakdown blaming everyone except himself for a lot of wasted money on average players.

  5. IN THE 70/80 ,S A LOT OF TOP PLAYERS USED TO HAVE CORTISONE INJECTIONS SO THAT THEY COULD PLAY WHILST CARRYING AN INJURY,AND A LOT OF THEM ARE PAYING THE PRICE NOW!
THE PROBLEM IS PLAYING ON WITH AN INJURY,EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN,T FEEL IT AT THE TIME , DOESN'T HELP THE HEALING PROCESS AND CAN LEAD TO PERMANANT DAMAGE.
REST AND/OR SURGERY IS THE ONLY REAL ANSWER !

Wtf. Oh that's alright then, you probably won't have to bend if you're playing Premiership football week in , week out will you? Ronaldo's soldiering on too at Madrid. What is it with these injections? In the old days, players used to get injured, be sidelined for a few weeks and you'd never hear about it again unless they were crocked. Now it's bits of bone sticking out, fractures and tears followed by an injection, and another one, followed by surgery, surgery, surgery.
