Reina issues rallying cry

Fri, 06 Nov 13:29:37 2009

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina has called on his team-mates to show "heart, passion and belief" despite Wednesday night's draw in Lyon leaving their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

Liverpool led through Ryan Babel's thunderbolt only for Lisandro Lopez to pop up with a last-gasp equaliser, meaning Rafael Benitez's side must now win their two remaining games in Group E and hope already-qualified Lyon can do them a favour against Fiorentina if they are to reach the last 16.

"If anyone can do this, Liverpool can. But now it (qualification) is not in our own hands, it does not only depend on what we do," said Reina.

"We must continue to show heart, passion and belief.

"We were unlucky, but we must keep fighting until we have more options with players getting fit again.

"I felt we had done enough to have won, and deserved it too. Maybe not beforehand in the previous matches when we did not play well.

"But this was different, this was a much better performance. When we play like we did in Lyon, we know we are good enough.

"Now it is very, very difficult for us. But we must show strong character and fight right to the end. We know we have enough good players to sort this out.

"The players will take heart from this, at least we know we are getting back to the form we know we should be producing every week."

  8. No more reliance on MIRACLES in football these days. Rafa Benitez and Liverpool should better forget this seasons ChampionsLeague and concentrate on qualifying for next season's CL 'cos the1r continuous insistence this season would rather cost them a Championsleague place come next season. If they don't improve their game, they will definitely be out of the first four at the end of the season in the EPL.

  11. lets play devils advocate. Yes we can dream and hope, but the reality is that it is unlikely that we are going to qualify. So, what does that leave? Having to qualify through the premiership and to be honest, even the most optimistic would have to be having a VERY optimistic day to believe that this shambles is going to improve to a degree where qualification is in the bag. So that leaves the club out of CL for two years, and in the world of football where loyalty is something to be scorned at, One could not blame players to want to play CL football, and you know who I mean, so yea, we can hope that this scenario doesn't happen, but shoving your head up your a** and hoping it won't is crazy in the extreme. The pack of cards are falling and last night should be the final straw. Do not wait, start the cull now, before its too late

  13. Truth is the team peaked last season and Rafa hasn't taken us on, yes injuries have taken their toll but he put all his eggs in one basket by spending the majority of his transfer budget on Johnson who although a good player is not going to make the difference between 2 and 1st especially as the player he replaced was quite a good player aswell. We should have also cashed in on Cavalieri who isn't good enough to push Reina, Dossena who is just awfull, Voronin who was wanted by Hertha for 3mill and Babel who Rafa clearly doesn't fancy, that would bring in around 16mill, why he signed Kryiakos when Ayala is clearly a good one for the future was another mistake, that 18mill would have bought us Sneijder,Van Der Vaart or Darren Bent, all who would have improved us instead of having a squad of players who would struggle to get a game at mid table teams. Also the fact he plays two soley defensive midfielders instead of playing one and using another forward bewilders me, I rate Lucas and Mascherano but neither are able to pass a killer ball like Alonso could so why he doesn't play 2 up front until Aquilani is fully fit instead of relying just on Torres, who's injuries may be down to the fact he has to run around like a headless chicken doing the job of 2 players. As much as I like Rafa his time is surely up as 1 win 1 draw and 6 defeats in the last 8 games simply is not good enough.

  17. Wonderful performance in Lyon- the only thing lacking was a second goal to finish them off, but as we all know a goal can come from anything(at least it wasn't a beach ball or an own goal. Question mark as to why it took so long to introduce Babel, but on another night Liverpool would of been 3 or 4 up by then anyway, it was a similar senareo at Anfield V Lyon- but then if you where guaranteed a win it wouldn't be a sport would it? If Liverpool dont qualify it will be of their own making as the group is judged over 6 games. Lyon are a good side so they might just gain a result at Florintina- but I think Florintina are the strongest in the group.
Brilliant performance by Arsenal and a good result from Chelsea, Man U somehow came back from the dead but their defence looks very, very shakey, however they are getting results and not playing well- you know the old addage......
One things for sure Rafa will not be able to rotate his squad as in previous years, the 11 fit will be the team but I think the new guy Aqualini will make some impact- somehow I think the season is far from over.
