The result, courtesy of a Manuel Friedrich header in the 71st minute, means the Bundesliga side also send Zurich and Spartak Moscow through from Group E, knocking Toulouse and the Czech champions out of the competition.

The home side lost their captain Carsten Ramelow to a red card on the hour mark, but battled hard for a deserved three points.

Spartak Moscow moved to the top spot in the group with a 1-0 win over Zurich at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Midfield playmaker Egor Titov scored the decisive goal with a 57th-minute strike from inside the penalty area.

Bordeaux joined Helsingborg in the last 32 with a 2-1 win on Thursday.

Marouane Chamakh put the French side ahead but Henrik Larsson equalised shortly afterwards.

The match turned when Adama Tamboura was given his marching orders for the visitors and Bordeaux managed to make their extra man tell, Jussie scoring the winner in the second half.

Helsingborg had already secured their progress from Group H with seven points from their first three games but defeat sees Bordeaux take top spot from them.

Getafe held off a late challenge from AaB to move a step closer to the knockout stage with a 2-1 win in Denmark.

Having beaten Tottenham at White Hart Lane, Michael Laudrup's side secured a second away victory in Group G thanks to Pablo Hernandez's 10th-minute strike and an individual effort from Esteban Granero.

Rade Prica netted a consolation in injury time for the Danes.

Aris Salonika kept their hopes of reaching the last 32 alive after coming from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Braga in a tightly-contested encounter.

Braga went in front courtesy of Austrian midfielder Roland Linz's early strike but Aris defender Ronaldo levelled matters midway through the first half to earn a share of the spoils for Dusan Bajevic's side.

Austria Vienna's faint hopes of progressing are over after they suffered a last-minute 1-0 defeat to Panionios.

Midfielder Ivica Majstorovic scored the only goal of the game in injury time with a neat close-range finish to give the Greek Super League side all three points.
