London Wasps took a vital 25-16 Heineken Cup win at Edinburgh with Danny Cipriani sending over seven kicks and Tom Rees scoring a try.
The result means Wasps go outright second in Pool 2, four points clear of the Scottish club and two behind Leinster.
Cipriani (pictured) put his England misery behind him as Wasps survived a sterling Edinburgh fightback in a thriller at Murrayfield.
The fly-half arrived in the Scottish capital having been dropped by his country after error-strewn displays in the opening two November Tests.
But he kicked 20 points in a near-flawless display with the boot to keep his side's quarter-final hopes alive.
Mark Robertson scored for Edinburgh, with record Scotland cap holder and points scorer Chris Paterson converting and adding three penalties.
Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe set a captain's example with two first-half tries as Sale Sharks claimed a bonus-point 36-6 victory over French outfit Montauban to climb to the top of Pool 1.
The Argentina back row scored in the fifth and 23rd minutes before Andy Tuilagi, Eifion Roberts and young replacement David Tait added second-half touchdowns to ensure a turbulent week at Edgeley Park ended on a high note.
Director of rugby Philippe-Saint-Andre announced on Thursday that he is to quit the club at the end of the season after five years in charge. He is poised to return to his native France and has several suitors, most notably Toulon.
However his dream to bow out as a European champion with Sale remains alive after this win in Lancashire.
England's forgotten fly-half Charlie Hodgson kicked four conversions and also added a penalty for Sale.
Defending champions Munster, who have won both their opening games, can reclaim top spot when they travel to Clermont on Sunday.
Cardiff Blues recorded a momentous 21-17 triumph over Biarritz to go eight points clear of their French rivals in Pool 6.
Kiwi Ben Blair kicked five penalties from five for the Blues while Nicky Robinson also sent over two drop-goals in a see-saw battle.
In Pool 4 Ulster secured their first victory over Llanelli Scarlets and their first win in this season's competition, winning 26-16 at Ravenhill to leapfrog their opponents.
Darren Cave and Simon Danielli scored first-half tries with Ian Humphreys kicking two penalties and a conversion to two penalties by Stephen Jones.
Jones reduced the deficit to 18-9 with a penalty but Humphreys replied then David Pollock crossed to make it 26-9 to the home side.
Ceiron Thomas scored a late consolation try which Jones converted for Scarlets.
The Irish outfit have four points and the Welsh one, while top two Stade Francais and Harlequins have nine apiece and a game in hand.

I hope the England rugby team isn't in danger of becoming like the football team - paralysed by fear and pressure from off the field - while somehow still able to play brilliantly for their club. Obviously they are not being used properly at a national level
